Huber Racing fights his way up to eighth position in slippery conditions

In difficult weather conditions, Huber Racing driver Leon Köhler fought his way to eighth place in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at Spa-Francorchamps.

The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is going from strength to strength. Only one week after the event at the Hungaroring, the top-class one-make cup made a appearance at the Ardennes rollercoaster of Spa-Francorchamps. The fifth round of the season took place on the traditional Belgian circuit. Huber Racing brought an additional car to the start. Bashar Mardini - a Kuwaiti-born Canadian who lives in the United Arab Emirates and competes under licence from the Arab nation - made a guest start in Belgium. Mardini and Huber Racing already have a long association: the gentleman driver competed for the Bavarian racing team in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East this winter and has already driven for Christoph Huber's team in the German Carrera Cup.

Qualifying on Saturday afternoon was difficult for Huber Racing: Leon Köhler was the best-placed driver for the Porsche team in eleventh position. After a penalty, Simone Iaquinta followed in 17th position. Five-time motorbike world champion Jorge Lorenzo and guest starter Mardini started the race side by side from 26th and 27th positions. Juan Manuel Fayan Lonyon had to experience, as in the previous week, how fiercely competitive the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is: The gentleman driver from Venezuela missed the qualification for the race.

In the starting lap, last year's DTM driver Köhler showed his qualities and left two competitors behind him, so that he finished the starting lap in ninth position. Köhler cemented this position in the further course of the race. Even the onset of rain, which later called the safety car onto the track and caused the race to be stopped early, did not unsettle Köhler. After some opponents slid off the track, the 23-year-old made up two positions, but lost them when the race was stopped, as the race was classified after nine laps. Due to a time penalty against a competitor, Köhler moved up one position to eighth place and was thus able to add important points to his account.

The other Huber drivers missed out on the points on the Ardennes rollercoaster. Simone Iaquinta was classified 20th and MotoGP legend Jorge Lorenzo finished 23rd, beating his teammate Bashar Mardini by 0.862 seconds.

"It's not the result we wanted before the weekend," said team manager Christoph Huber. "It's a pity that the race was stopped early and so a better result was taken away from us. Nevertheless, Leon collected important points in eighth place."

The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup now enters a four-week summer break before the final two race events take place. The top-class one-make cup will complete two races on the dune circuit at Zandvoort. In the Netherlands, the Porsche racing series will make up for the cancelled race in Imola. Only one week later, the season finale will take place in the royal park of Monza.
