Strong performance nets Parkins and Greatorex wins at Laguna

Ryan Parkins dominated Round 3 of Sunday’s Virtual Porsche Club GB Championship at Laguna Seca. Parkins was almost 6 seconds up the road as he crossed the line, sealing a victory in the first of two races at the legendary track. It was Carl Sharkey who looked promising at the start though, charging into the lead at lights out from the second row, with Ryan Parkins and Austin Greatorex following closely behind. Carnage ensued further down the field that resulted in several cars spinning out on the very first lap.

By lap four the race had settled down, with Parkins now in the lead, Sharkey in second and Greatorex in third. Paul Riga was also in the mix in fourth and put Greatorex under pressure, both drivers trading places numerous times before Greatorex finally pulled away. There were many new faces to the championship and most of them impressed the viewers, while some others struggled to get to grips with the tricky Porsche 911 race car.

Just before the white flag was displayed to start the final lap, Sharkey had managed to launch a strong run down the front straight to close the gap between himself and Parkins, making it all the way to his back bumper. Despite the pressure, Parkins took the win in Round 3 with Sharkey second and Greatorex third.

Round 4 was a reversed grid and as the lights turned green, carnage once again rained down as the front runners collided. Ryan Penny emerged as the leader with Amreek Sachdev in second and Stuart Clarke in third. But by lap four it had all changed again with Danny Jones now in front and Greatorex in second, who had gained a impressive twenty two positions in the first four laps. By lap nine Greatorex had taken the lead with Parkins who had made a charge through the field, now in second and Jones in third. Despite losing a couple of places, Jones made it back into third but Parkins was not letting up for the final podium spot. With constant pressure, Jones found himself in a spin off at the Corkscrew allowing Parkins to retake third spot. Greatorex held on to take the win with Parkins in second and Sharkey in third.

Austin Greatorex : “I'm more than happy the race finished a lap early. Ryan was catching at a silly pace, but to come from the back and win the race I'll take that all day long. I made contact and the car was slightly damaged but the car did not feel that bad. So I thought I will carry on going and see how I get on and thankfully it worked. Going into Monza for the next race I would love to be hopeful that it will be a clean race but previous experience in sim racing …The first corner at Monza is possibly the worst corner of any game. You have to pick your moments you have to charm and be patient and don’t try and rush it.”

Ryan Parkins: “I really enjoyed it apart from the start in race one, my wheels just kept spinning and spinning. In the reverse grid in race two I started from the back. I just held for about half a second before I hit the gas before the green light and even then, I ended up on the grass. It was intense just trying to survive the start. I really like Monza so the next race is going to be tricky but I'm really looking forward it, it's going to be a tough race.”
