Fredrik Ekblom – guest driver with the right to score

Fredrik Ekblom has not competed since autumn 2018. But at Ring Knutstorp 7-8 May, the former racing champion is making a comeback. This takes place in Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia where Ekblom's participation will be somewhat unique. He will be the first guest driver ever with the right to score points in the championship.

Mika Häkkinen, Kenny Bräck, Felix Rosenqvist, Jacques Villeneuve.... Everyone has jumped into Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. However, as guest drivers, regardless of the result, they have not been credited with any points. Now that rule changes and Fredrik Ekblom gets the chance to make an extra impression when he makes his racing debut in a Porsche on Swedish soil. "We're doing this to get better racing, simply increase the value of the show," says Thomas Johansson, Sporting Director.

Participating in the team championship

Since previous guest drivers have not competed for points, the regular drivers in the championship have not had much interest in challenging them. They have reasoned something like this: Why overtake, with the risks it can entail, when there is nothing to gain from it in terms of points? But this year there will be a difference. The drivers of Porsche Sweden's guest car with the starting number 911 will not only fight for places in the race. They will also score points. Both individually and in the team championship.

Car 911 will be Porsche Experience Racing's representative in the team championship. No matter who's in it. The guest driver also always forms a team with Prince Carl Philip, Porsche Experience Racing's Masters Cup driver. Fredrik Ekblom and Prince Carl Philip will undoubtedly be a fairly sharp duo in the premiere at Ring Knutstorp, but we can assure that the prince will also have extremely competent colleagues in the second competitions of the season.

Porsche victory at Spa

Fredrik Ekblom is looking forward to his first race start in a Porsche on Swedish soil.
"In the 1990s, I drove some Porsches. Partly in the Carrera Cup Benelux, in an Italian-Swiss Porsche series, but also in the Supercup. I have actually won in a Porsche both at Spa and at Monza," ekblom says during a lunch break at Mantorp Park. "But my last competitive appearance in a Porsche was at historic GP in Copenhagen a few years ago. But then I drove a Porsche from 1972, which is not at all comparable to the car I'm going to race in now.

Pleasantly surprised by the car

Ekblom is in place at Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia's roll out (April 15-16) for the 2021 season.
"This is actually the first time I've been on a Swedish motor track since the 2018 season finale right here at Mantorp Park," he says. But Ekblom, who has turned 50, seems to be enjoying himself. As fit as ever, just as curious, humble, nice and eager to make good results. "It's a lot of fun to come here and drive, but it's hard, the car is much faster and has more engine than I thought," he admits, looking a little ponderous.

When we start talking about expectations for his entry into the championship, Ekblom honestly replies: " I don't know. What do you think? You do the best you can, then you see where it lands.
