Harry King scores fifth Deutschland podium to maintain title challenge
Rising star Harry King secured a fifth podium finish in eight races as his programme in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland resumed at the Nürburgring.
The famous circuit in the Eifel played host to rounds seven and eight of the season as racing resumed after the mid-season break, with the event marking the first time that Harry had competed at one of the most famous circuits in world motorsport.
Despite his lack of circuit experience compared to many of his rivals, Harry showed solid pace from the moment he hit the track in his Allied-Racing-run car, and an impressive run in qualifying saw him secure third on the grid for the weekend's opening race.
That was despite the fact that traffic would be an issue throughout the session as 32 cars battled for space on the Nürburgring’s shorter sprint circuit, and it would hamper Harry’s bid to set a second quick time - meaning his second fastest lap would leave him back in P11 on the grid for race two.
The opening half-hour race of the weekend on Saturday would prove to be a positive one for the BRDC Superstar driver, with a fine move around the outside of Morris Schuring at turn one allowing Harry to climb into second spot.
After an early caution period, Harry was able to retain his position throughout the race as he picked up his fifth podium of the 2023 campaign.
Sunday’s second race would be held in treacherous wet conditions as heavy rain hit the circuit, but Harry showed all of his skill to make up ground in the early stages when racing kicked off, despite multiple safety car periods due to incidents elsewhere in the field.
A fine drive saw Harry take the flag in fifth place on the road, although an unfortunate penalty for contact as he made his way up the order dropped him to ninth in the result.
Harry ends the weekend still sitting second in the championship standings, and has extended his advantage over third-placed Loek Harthog.
"Having never raced at the Nürburgring before, the weekend was a bit of a step into the unknown," Harry said.
"On the one hand, qualifying was really positive with third on the grid for race one but on the other, it was difficult as we struggled with traffic when trying to get a second lap in, which meant we were further down the order than we should have been for race two.
"The opening race was all down to the start and I managed to get into P2 at the first corner, and after the safety car, it was all quite calm and relaxed.
"Race two was more of a challenge with the weather conditions, so to come through to P5 on the road was great, particularly after we lost quite a lot of racing early on behind the safety car.
"Even with the penalty, we finished ahead of where we started and it means we remain second in the standings, and have got more of a buffer over the pack behind."
