First pole position in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup for rookie Laurin Heinrich
Surprise at the premiere of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at the Circuit Zandvoort. The Nebulus Racing by Huber team conquered the entire front row of the grid for the sixth round of the season on the Formula 1 race track in the Netherlands. Laurin Heinrich from Germany, one of the rookies in the international one-make cup with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, secured pole position.
The second fastest in qualifying was his German team-mate Leon Köhler. Ayhancan Güven (BWT Lechner Racing) starts Sunday's race from third on the grid. The Porsche Junior from Turkey shares the second row of the grid with the Italian Simone Iaquinta (Dinamic Motorsport). Championship leader Larry ten Voorde (Team GP Elite) qualified as the fifth fastest. This means that the Dutchman starts four places ahead of his fiercest pursuer in the title fight, the New Zealander Jaxon Evans (Martinet by Alméras).
"A perfect qualifying for me. My second lap was the fastest. I think I would have been even faster on the second set tyre towards the end of qualifying. But at that time the track was already too dirty," polesetter Heinrich described the conditions on the completely renovated Formula 1 circuit on the North Sea coast. Here, almost every brakeman results in a detour into a gravel bed. When driving back to the race track, the small stones are carried onto the track and impair the grip of the tyres.
Heinrich's team-mate Köhler was one of the few drivers who were able to improve at the second attempt despite the deteriorating track conditions.
"I changed the setup of my car between the first and second attempts. I coped much better with that," the sixth in the standings revealed. Porsche Junior Güven saw third place on the grid as the starting point for an exciting three-way battle with the two drivers from the Nebulus Racing by Huber team: "Of course I wanted more. But P3 is still a good starting position. Let's see what I can do with it in the race."
Qualifying was also not optimal for championship leader Larry ten Voorde.
"We tried something in the beginning that didn't work. After a change in the set-up, I improved to fifth on the grid on the dirter track – it almost feels like a pole position," commented the defending Supercup champion.
Laurin Heinrich originally comes from digital simracing and is contesting his first full season in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.
The 19-year-old from Würzburg is therefore one of the so-called rookies in the 375 kW (510 hp) Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. The rookies receive support throughout the season through the Supercup organization, including their own coach and special fitness training. In discussions with experienced professionals, including winners of the 24-hour race at Le Mans, they receive valuable tips. At the end of the year, not only the fastest rookie on the race track will be honored. The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup also enables the winner of an internal evaluation to take part in courses and races on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. The goal is to obtain eligibility to participate in the local 24-hour race.
A car that has already won the endurance classic on the demanding Nordschleife will present itself to the tens of thousands of fans at the Circuit Zandvoort this weekend. The Porsche 911 GT3-R of the Manthey Racing team, commonly known as "Grello" among fans, will do some demonstration laps with historic racing cars from the Porsche Museum and special road cars of the brand on Sunday directly before the Formula 1 race.
The sixth round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will run over 15 laps on Sunday (5 September 2021) from 12:010
CEST. The TV channels Eurosport and Sky Sport as well as the streaming service f1tv.formula1.com broadcast the race live. Fans can also follow the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at any time on the social networks Twitter (@PorscheSupercup and @PorscheRaces), Instagram (@PorscheSupercup) and Facebook (@PorscheSupercup).
