Harry King secures Monaco podium finish

Harry King made it two podium finishes from two in the 2024 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup with a strong second place on the streets of Monaco.

Harry went into the weekend having kicked off his Supercup campaign with a runner-up finish at Imola a week earlier and was hoping to repeat his stunning victory in the biggest race on the schedule twelve months earlier.

The weekend started in perfect fashion for Harry when he topped the times at the wheel of his BWT Lechner Racing-run car with a best lap that was nearly three-tenths of a second quicker than anyone else, leaving confidence high going into qualifying.

As expected, qualifying would be somewhat chaotic with a number of incidents on track, one of which hampered Harry on his final run as he was forced to back out when a red flag was called.

Despite that, he would end up on the front of the grid alongside title rival Larry ten Voorde, with the pair sharing the front row in the principality for the second year in succession.

Whereas Harry had managed to win the race down to the first corner at Saint Devote last season, it was ten Voorde who retained his advantage this time around, with Harry slotting in behind on the run up the hill towards Casino Square.

Mindful of the challenges that come from trying to overtake around the tight and twisty street circuit, Harry focused on making sure he avoided getting caught up in any incidents as he chased ten Voorde throughout whilst also easing away from third-placed Keagan Masters behind.

Setting a best lap that was almost identical to ten Voorde during the race, Harry would follow the Dutchman to the finish for another second place finish to retain his position behind the defending champion in the standings ahead of the next event on the schedule at the Red Bull Ring at the end of June.

Prior to that, Harry will bid to defend his lead in Carrera Cup Deutschland, with events upcoming at both Zandvoort and the Hungaroring over the next month.

“My start to the race was perfect but unlike last year, Larry also got away well,” he said. “Overtaking here is so difficult that I just had to focus on not making any mistakes and staying within striking distance of Larry in case the opportunity arose to make a move.

“P2 at Monaco and being on the podium is still a very special feeling and it means we have scored more good points for the championship which is the most important thing at this stage of the season.

“It means we have retained our position in the standings ahead of the Red Bull Ring, which is a circuit where I’ve had success in the past and which is the home track for BWT Lechner Racing, so hopefully we can fight for another strong result there.”
