Kevin Nielsen a model of perfection under pressure in Round 5 of the PorscheSport Carrera Cup

The Scandinavia driver withstands the race-long pressure from Racekraft Esports driver Sam Kuitert as World Championship driver Brian Lockwood suffers another tough night in the series. Lockwood started on pole for the first Heat Race of the night at the British track joined by Nürburgring race winner Kuitert on the front row. Nielsen meanwhile was joined by Alexander Lauritzen on the second row whilst PorscheSport’s Gavin Halls made up the Top 5 for Heat Race 1. Heat Race 2 and Gunonso Tasdelen was on pole joined by Impulse Racing’s Pascal Costa. Teammate to Tasdelen Cenik Inceoglu was joined by Max Ramsteijn behind on the second row as Costa’s teammate Marcel Jochheim made up the Top 5 for Heat Race 2.

Top class Motorsport by the 18 drivers that formed the grid for Heat Race 1 at Brands Hatch as Nielsen claimed the lead from Lauritzen who had a rocket start. Meanwhile, there was bad luck once again for Brian Lockwood and Gavin Halls who had both started in promising positions with the slightest touch from Alexey Nesov on Halls’ Porsche 911 Cup car in Turn 1 starting a domino effect.

Teammates only a few rounds ago, Nielsen and Lauritzen’s battle also allowed Kuitert to join the battle for 1st as they went three-wide into Clark Curve with 10 minutes to go. Nielsen hung onto the lead in a spectacular display of first-class clean motorsport from the three drivers. Kuitert and Lauritzen battled for second place, the remainder of the race and up to the line with Dylan Birse, allowing star newcomer Nielsen to claim the win in Heat Race 1. Kuitert claimed the second spot by a mere two-hundredths of a second, followed by Lauritzen in third and Birse in fourth. Lockwood who went into the barrier at Druids in Lap 1, recovered to finish sixth and go into the Feature Race.

A brilliant start for Gunonso Tasdelen allowed the Team Anatolia driver to take the lead of Heat Race 2 in the opening stages of the 20-minute race as the drivers charged down towards Paddock Hill bend. Whilst a great piece of car control in the opening stages from Rebecca Pauline who had an impressive outing at the Nürburgring winning the Consolation Race, kept her in contention for a place in the Feature Race. Ramsteijn meanwhile in second kept the pressure on Tasdelen throughout the race but could not find the move to take the lead allowing Tasdelen who had led from the start to win the second Heat Race of the night whilst Cenik Inceoglu finished in third, followed by R8G Junior Esports driver Quentin Vialatte in fourth as Fiercely Forward’s Rebecca Pauline made her way into the Feature Race at Brands Hatch finishing in seventh.

The Consolation Race at Brands Hatch was packed with hard action as Hendryk Lichtenhagen started on pole joined by Marcel Jochheim on the front row. Meanwhile, Gavin Halls who was unlucky in Heat Race 1 lined up in third joined by Vince Peeters on the second row with Matias Birk making up the Top 5 in the Consolation Race.

Going tight into Paddock Hill bend, Gavin Halls finally got on the good side of the green to move up into second before sliding wide and dropping down to seventh as Lichtenhagen who had taken the lead now found himself defending hard from the attack of Jochheim with Birk and Peeters in the mix in what was a tense battle for the lead as the Top 4 cars all defended their positions coming up to the halfway point of the Consolation Race with Lichtenhagen still in the lead. With over 6 minutes left this was when the Consolation Race heated up as in a move that mattered with both drivers in the AM Category, Birk attacked Jochheim for second place as Gavin Halls laid in wait having moved up to fourth. All the while, Hendryk Lichtenhagen had opened up a 1.3-second advantage over the chasing pack with just over 5 minutes left to race but saw that gap cut to a car’s length in the closing stages of the race, as they went into Sterling in a tense final lap. Lichtenhagen managing to hold off the Porsche 911s and the swarm of teams including Impulse Racing, Volante Racing and PorscheSport behind him to claim the win in the Consolation Race.

Kevin Nielsen lined up on pole for the Feature Race joined by Gunonso Tasdelen as 30 Porsche 911 Cup cars packed onto the grid and down to Turn 1. Nielsen’s rocket start from lights out allowed the Scandinavia driver to go into the Paddock Hill bend straight away and take the lead followed by Sam Kuitert who had a great start off the line in what was a chaotic opening lap filled with incidents. A mistake from Vialatte allowed rival Lockwood to move past him with the battle for first continuing leading up to the 20-minute mark as the Racekraft team who have had a conflicting season so far, had a mixed round at Brands Hatch with Nick Harwood involved in an incident at the back of the pack whilst Kuitert was battling at the top and aiming to deliver the best points finish possible for the team. Behind Kevin Nielsen and Sam Kuitert who were increasing their gap at the front, Dylan Birse and Gunonso Tasdelen had their battle as Ramsteijn also had to go into defensive mode to keep Lauritzen and the four other Porsche 911 Cup cars at bay with 10 minutes to go. Brian Lockwood searched for a confidence booster which he received from his battle with Tasdelen, the Florida driver moving ahead of the Team Antonia driver up to fifth with separate breakaways beginning to form across the field and the tension building with 7 minutes left of the Feature Race.

Maxim Ramsteijn showed how easy it is to make a mistake at Paddock Hill dropping down the order from third to sixth as Lauritzen moved up to third but now had to defend Lockwood who was in the hunt for a podium finish. Meanwhile, the first-place battle between Nielsen and Kuitert had extended to a 4 second lead with a minute left as Lauritzen slid and barged into Lockwood in a climactic last lap of action at the British track which allowed Gunonso Tasdelen to take the final spot on the podium, out of nowhere and Kevin Nielsen who had won this season in Round 1 at Mid-Ohio taking the chequered flag to claim victory at Brands Hatch with only two races left to go in the PorscheSport Carrera Cup.

Round 6 of the PorscheSport Carrera Cup continues at the Suzuka GP as the series enters its penultimate round on the 30th of May.
