Anton Marklund returns to Carrera Cup with Mtech Competition
Two months ago, Anton Marklund opened the door to a possible racing comeback. It's done. In the premiere at Ring Knutstorp 7-8 May, the Northerner will once again be included in the starting field in Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. "It will be fun and inspiring to run the Carrera Cup again," says Anton, who is working on getting more starts in the championship during the season.
In the 2016-2019 seasons, Anton Marklund made is debut in Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. The former European rallycross champion quickly developed behind the wheel of his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and in 2018 he became champion in the Porsche Approved Cup. The following year he took the step to the main class in a 991 II and made a success directly in the premiere at Ring Knutstorp. He followed up a strong qualifying lead by finishing fourth in the opening heat. In the second, he hit third place, his first podium finish in the championship.
"Since I didn't run racing at all last year, we will see how ratt-like I am compared to when I competed in Skåne in 2019. But Ring Knutstorp is a track that I have liked before and that I have driven fast on. That's why it feels extra fun to get back there in my comeback in the championship," says Anton.
Drive for Mtech Competition
But this time it will be without Marklund Motorsport and the friends there as the 28-year-old from Boliden makes the almost 140-mile journey south.
"It is with a little mixed feelings because in all the years I have driven the Carrera Cup I have done it with my men at Marklund Motorsport; Tony, Per, Andreas and Magnus. Not doing it with them this time feels a bit scary, but I'll probably survive it too," Anton says jokingly.
It is with experienced and highly respected Mtech Competition that we will see Anton Marklund this year. There he becomes a team-mate with Prince Carl Philip and Thomas Karlsson.
"It's great to get the opportunity and do this together with Mtech Competion and manager Magnus Karlsson. It's a very good team that I have
a lot of confidence in," says Anton, adding: "Since it's unclear how much I'm going to be able to drive, it doesn't make sense to run my own team. Therefore, the solution with Mtech is perfect.
Hope for more starts
Anton Marklund will be there in the premiere at Ring Knutstorp 7-8 May is ready. That race does not clash with any of his involvement in rallycross, the sport in which he has both European Championship title and World Championship credentials. Rallycross is still Marklund's home ground. That's where he makes his professional bet. However, the extent of his rallycross competition in 2021 is not yet clear, making it difficult for him to promise many appearances in porsche carrera cup scandinavia.
"The knot is ready and I am working on getting more competitions," he says, admitting that the competition at Gelleråsen Arena in August attracts a little extra. "Gelleråsen is a course that is close to my heart and that I think is fun to drive.
Test before the premiere
Ring Knutstorp, Gelleråsen Arena and maybe another competition? Marklund hopes but cannot give a definitive answer. He is happy to be back in the Championship, no matter how many appearances there may be.
"It is both fun and developing to run the Carrera Cup and it will be great to come to Ring Knutstorp and meet everyone in the championship again.
Maybe there will be a reunion already on the roll out at Mantorp Park april 15-16? "That particular week I am invited to two rallycross tests, but at present it is unclear if they will happen. If I can't participate at Mantorp Park, Mtech has a scheduled test in Karlskoga the following week. Since I didn't drive Porsche at all last year and am going to race for a new team, it feels good to at least get a test opportunity before the premiere.
