Porsche wins in both classes on the streets of Long Beach

The two Porsche 963s fielded by Porsche Penske Motorsport also finished the sprint race in Long Beach in the first two places. In the 100-minute race on the narrow street circuit in California, Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy celebrated their third victory in the third race of the year.

The duo from Brazil and Great Britain in the No. 7 car had already won the endurance races at Daytona and Sebring. Matt Campbell from Australia and Mathieu Jaminet from France finished the third race of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season in second place in the No. 6 sister car. In the GTD class, the AO Racing customer team celebrated victory with the Porsche 911 GT3 R.

Porsche continued its impressive run in the current 2025 season in the first sprint race of the year. In sunny conditions and temperatures of around 19 degrees Celsius, the strategists and mechanics of the Porsche Penske Motorsport works team in particular kept a cool head: a quick pit stop for both Porsche 963s during the first safety car phase after around 20 minutes brought the decision. The two 496 kW (674 hp) hybrid prototypes were dispatched faster than the vehicles of the competition and took over the double lead. The two Porsche 963s did not relinquish this until the finish and thus clinched the second one-two victory of the year.

"What a great day for Porsche! First the victory of our works team in the Formula E ePrix in Miami, then the next one-two for Porsche Penske Motorsport in the IMSA series," says Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Motorsport. "I am enormously proud of our drivers, the strong teams, the loyal partners and everyone who has contributed to these successes at our development site in Weissach. Congratulations also to our customer team AO Racing, which won the GTD class with the 911 GT3 R. We would like to continue like this this season."

"Once again a very successful weekend for Porsche in the USA. In three IMSA races so far, we have now scored three victories," says Urs Kuratle, Vice President Factory Motorsport LMDh. Today it was once again a perfectly completed race by everyone involved. We didn't make any mistakes – simply optimal."

"The Long Beach Grand Prix celebrated its 50th birthday this weekend – and we made the party even better with a one-two finish," explains Jonathan Diuguid, Executive Director Porsche Penske Motorsport. The work in the pits was the key to victory today. Thanks to optimal, fast handling, we brought our two cars to the top and thus made victory possible. In the exciting, final phase of the race, Felipe and Matt showed perfect performances. We're playing at the top level at the moment and want to continue in the same way."

With the third victory in a row and the second one-two after Sebring, Porsche has further pulled away from the competition at the top of the championship standings. In the manufacturers' standings, the gap to the nearest pursuers is already over 100 points. In the drivers' standings, Nasr and Tandy are in first place ahead of their brand colleagues Campbell and Jaminet.

The customer team JDC-Miller MotorSports missed out on a top result in the city race in Long Beach due to bad luck. The yellow Porsche 963 with the starting number 85 was on course for fifth place at the halfway point of the race, but fell back decisively due to contact with a lapped GT car. Gianmaria Bruni from Italy and the Dutchman Tijmen van der Helm were classified tenth in the end.

Vanthoor continues winning streak in the "Rexy" Porsche 911 GT3 R

Because the GTD-Pro category was suspended at Long Beach, the customer team AO Racing sent the 911 GT3 R, known as the "Rexy", to the grid in the GTD class without further ado. With great success: The green crowd favourite wrapped in dinosaur design won in the streets of the Californian port city. In addition to Britain's Jonny Edgar, works driver Laurens Vanthoor was also at the wheel. The Belgian continued his winning streak at Long Beach after overall victories with Porsche Penske Motorsport at Daytona and Sebring. The identical nine-eleven, up to 416 kW (565 hp) from Wright Motorsports finished the race in seventh position.

Drivers' comments after the race

Felipe Nasr (Porsche 963 #7): "Three races, three wins! The whole team did an incredible job. The result is another double success. Nick rode strong as a bear at the beginning and stayed out of all adversity. In the end, it was all about paying as much attention as possible to the tyres and fuel consumption. Everything worked perfectly. We got the reward we deserved."

Nick Tandy (Porsche 963 #7): "It's just unbelievable! We won this race thanks to strategy, good work in the pits and strong driver performances. In the end, it was mainly a matter of dividing up the available energy appropriately until the end. The car was really fast at all times – fantastic. I love winning races. It's been an incredible start to this year's season so far."

Matt Campbell (Porsche 963 #6): "We are happy about the next double victory for our team. After the excellent results at Daytona and Sebring, the result is of course worth its weight in gold. We have taken another step in the championship. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough for us in the number 6 car to achieve a big triumph again. But there are more races to come this season."

Gianmaria Bruni (Porsche 963 #85): "Our car was really strong. Unfortunately, we didn't get the reward we deserved. On the way to the sixth turn, I lapped a GT car. I had already passed, but then it hit me on the left side of the rear. I then spun. The rear wing was broken and had to be replaced. The pit stop that was due threw us back a long way. It's a shame, because today we could have done a lot more."

Laurens Vanthoor (Porsche 911 GT3 R #177): "That was perfect! We had a plan in place before the race. This has worked out perfectly. We didn't install any new wheels during the pit stop, but we had an advantage with the still warm tyres in the outlap and thus kept the competition at bay. We stayed in front until the end. It was a lot of fun to drive 'Rexy' to the class win."

Adam Adelson (Porsche 911 GT3 R #120): "Seventh place is not the result we had originally hoped for. We made a few small mistakes in the race. These have led to us losing some positions. After all, we brought our car to the finish line in one piece and scored a relatively large number of championship points. Now we're looking forward to the next race at Laguna Seca with great anticipation."
