Porsche double podium: World champion Wehrlein wins in Miami
Victory at the Miami E-Prix for World Champion Pascal Wehrlein, 3rd place for his teammate António Félix da Costa. In the highly efficient Porsche 99X Electric, Wehrlein drove to victory from ninth on the grid and also secured a point for the fastest race lap. Da Costa had started the race from 3rd place and led confidently until shortly before the end.
However, an accident in the midfield and an associated restart destroyed his lead and finally gave the Portuguese 3rd place. He is now in second place in the drivers' world championship, Wehrlein in third.
With the result in Miami, the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team also exceeded the 1,000 championship points mark since entering Formula E in the 2019/2020 season. In addition, the team from Weissach once again took the lead in the team standings.
Nico Müller from the Porsche customer team Andretti Formula E crossed the finish line in fourth place. His teammate, former world champion Jake Dennis, finished ninth in the fourth Porsche 99X Electric. With Dan Ticktum from the second customer team Cupra Kiro in 7th place, a total of five of the six Porsche cars finished in the top ten.
The victory in the Miami E-Prix also meant the third success for Porsche Motorsport in Florida within eleven weeks. Previously, the Porsche Penske Motorsport sports car works team had won the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring with the Porsche 963 – an exceptional success that the Formula E team has now extended.
Comments on the Miami E-Prix
Florian Modlinger, Overall Project Manager Formula E: "A fantastic double podium here in Miami on a really cool track. After a good qualifying with António in 3rd place and Pascal in 9th place, we are very happy about the victory and the podium. You could see how strong António was when he used his six-minute Attack Mode. But then the safety car came, which changed the course of the race. I think we got the best out of it as a team under the circumstances. A win and 3rd place are great. And three Porsches in the top four places and five Porsches in the top nine, that's a fantastic result. We're looking forward to the next race in Monaco."
Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche works driver (#1): "What a crazy race! Qualifying didn't go according to plan with 9th place because I was unlucky again after two sector best times with a dirty track. But if you look at the course of the race and what happened then, I think we both deserved the podium. We had a very good strategy, but in the end we were also a bit lucky to finish first. I am very happy. That's a good result for the team."
António Félix da Costa, Porsche works driver (#13): "It's a podium, but one that hurts a bit. We drove a perfect race. We implemented our energy and strategy perfectly with the team. The attack mode missions were fantastic. When we took the last Attack Mode with a three-second advantage and the safety car came out, it was impossible to stay in front of our pursuers. That was very painful. Nevertheless, Pascal and I were on the podium and we got closer to the championship leader. We want to be as strong again in Monaco."
