GB overall win in the Sim Racing Porsche Club Challenge

The iconic Porsche Clubs from the USA, Canada & UK went head to head for the second instalment of the Porsche Club battle. There has certainly been a huge awareness drawn to sim racing since most countries are currently in a lockdown situation, with Porsche drivers and simracers competing on the virtual track. Porsche Clubs around the world are well known and respected for their events held throughout the year, whilst race meetings, cars & coffee and Porsche festivals might be currently out of the picture, members of the PCA & PCGB took on the virtual challenge.

Matthew Dorrington again took the victory and claimed the overall win but was certainly challenged all the way by Michael Polasek. Dorrington continued his recent dominance surviving the final laps of wheel-to-wheel action with Polasek taking the checkered flag after a thrilling race. The British driver became the first driver to take both races in the two-part esport International Sim Racing Challenge.

There was drama on the very first lap when Polasek sent William Chadwick spinning after contact between them both. Fortunately, for Polasek, the race directors deemed it a racing incident and he avoided a penalty, with Carr moving into third spot. The top three remained the same for most of the race but with only twenty minutes to go Polasek was hit from behind sending him into spin and dropping him down ten places.

This left Dorrington still in the lead with Greg Carr in second and Matthew Kuekes in third. Polasek was not giving up and clawed his way through the field to regain the fight at the front. With only five minutes left to race Polasek was now back into second and was biting on the heels of Dorrington, but despite the pressure it was Dorrington who took the win with Polasek in second and  Carr taking third.

Our own PorscheSport car driven by Luke Holroyd, was making progress throughout the race, coming from 44th on the grid to 17th in the opening laps. Unfortunately, he was hit by reversing car attempting to re-enter the track, this resulted in heavy damage and making the car almost impossible to drive.

Matthew Dorrington:  '“I can't believe it! A brilliant battle with Michael. I think he had more pace than me to be honest, I'm chuffed to bits again to win two races. I did an early stop for two reasons, I had a bit of damage and I knew I was not going to catch Michael on pure pace so I had to try something a little bit different but unfortunately the incident happened and that was that. “

Michael Polasek: “There was bit of change in mindset from the point where I got hit to the point where I rejoined the track and you know what, I knew I was the fastest car on track. I know that because I qualified on pole I think I set the fastest lap in the race so I changed my mindset to deal with it and go full pelt every single lap and try and put in fast lap after fast lap and pretty much brake for nobody. I just pushed as hard as I could, I was very lucky to catch up the leaders. Matthew was very difficult to catch, I had to do everything to close him down and when we were fighting together that’s when things got interesting, but unfortunately I overstepped the last corner and I got a wheel on the grass and slid a little - that cost me the win.”

Greg Carr: “I was not expecting to finish this high up in the race but the car felt pretty good and I almost had it but it was an awesome race with Michael and Matthew and the rest of the drivers. It helped that I’ve raced here before, it was a different set up, but I like the car better when the tires start to wear. It sounds a bit weird but I like the car better when it gets a bit twitchy, for some reason when the car has a lot of grip I'm not as confident with the car. “
