Surprised Sundahl at the top despite less successful season opening

Points-wise, the start of the season is his worst since 2017. Nevertheless, Lukas Sundahl tops porsche carrera cup scandinavia after two races. "It hasn't been the start I was hoping for and in terms of the results, I'm surprised that I'm leading the championship," sundahl says ahead of the next three races at Scandinavian Raceway in Anderstorp 5-6 August.

Lukas Sundahl has won two of four races in the season opener of Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia 2022. It's perfectly normal to be him. But the Smålander has also broken one race and finished ninth in another. However, it is very unusual to be the four-time champion. In the premiere in Anderstorp, Sundahl went off with brake problems in the opening heat. Then he was second. At Drivecenter Arena in Fällfors, he, and others with him, became a victim of water on the track. He slipped off and only got nine points home. When the accident occurred, he was leading. "It could have been much better if I hadn't messed it up twice," he says self-critically.

Many zeros
But it's not just Lukas Sundahl of the top-tipped drivers who had concerns at the start of the season. Fragus Motorsport trio Hampus Ericsson, Pontus Fredricsson and Edvin Hellsten have, like the reigning champion, each broken their race. Emil Persson, newcomer Marcus Annervi and comebacking Scanian Ola Nilsson, who are third, fourth and fifth respectively in the table, have avoided zeroes so far, but their points harvest is still not quite enough, even if it is even at the top of the championship. Sundahl leads on 63 points, Ericsson is second on 60 and he is in turn shadowed by Emil Persson with 59. Behind the medal trio are Annervi 51, Nilsson 50 and Fredricsson 44.

Welcomes extra races
Next weekend, the championship continues with the second race of the season at the former Formula 1 circuit Scandinavian Raceway in Anderstorp. Although the home course is not Sundahl's favorite on the calendar, it is on the Smålander that has achieved the greatest success in his Carrera Cup career. Therefore, Sundahl doesn't mind that the race will include three races. The third heat from Fällfors, which was cancelled due to fog, has been moved to Anderstorp and will be decided Friday evening. The other two heats are run the following day. "It's not wrong that there will be an extra race in Anderstorp," says Sundahl, who will start in pole position and alone in the first start. Norwegian guest driver Dennis Hauger, who qualified second in Norrland, will not start in Småland.

Superior in qualifying Before the
third race from Fällfors is decided Friday night, the drivers will qualify for the two regular Anderstorps heats. Often the tough fights for the top starting positions in the races can be about hundredths, maybe thousandths. So far this year, it hasn't looked like that at all. Why? Lukas Sundahl has been absolutely dominant. Smålänningen has won all four qualifiers by a good margin. Most notable so far is his performance in Q1 in the premiere. At the time, micke Kågered Racing driver with the starting number 1 on his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (992) was more than eight tenths ahead of the nearest competitor. "The qualifiers have been devilishly good. Our speed in terms of qualifying has been a bit superior," says Sundahl, who is otherwise rarely satisfied.

No more mistakes
It remains to be seen if the reigning champion can continue to out-qualify his competitors when the championship visits Scandinavian Raceway for the second time this year.
That's his goal, of course — as well as not to make any more mistakes. "No, I hope I filled that quota for this season," he says.
