PorscheSport eSports to fly the Brumos colours in Sportscar Championship

The eSports team supported by PorscheSport will take part in the VSCA Sportscar Championship sporting a legendary design in honour of an iconic American team who wrote a key chapter in Porsche’s stateside legacy – Brumos.

The Brumos name originates from the owner of a car dealership in Miami Springs. In 1955, Hubert Brundage was one of the first to field a Porsche vehicle in a racing series outside Europe. His enterprise Brundage Motors had the telex address BRUMOS and so the legend was born.

Brumos owner since the mid 1960s, Peter Gregg, came into the world of racing with a background in naval intelligence. One day, the New Yorker spotted a 59 on the side of an aircraft carrier. This number and exact font became central to the Brumos Porsche identity.

Alongside his considerable driving ability, Peter Gregg is also acclaimed for spotting an exceptional young talent at a Jacksonville autocross – Hurley Haywood. Dubbed ‘Batman and Robin’, the pair formed a formidable alliance that transcended sports car racing.

Back on home soil after a stint in the Vietnam war, Haywood clinched victory with Gregg in the inaugural IMSA race at Virginia International Raceway in 1971 with an orange Porsche 914. For four more decades, a relentless flow of success with Porsche race cars netted Brumos 15 titles and 48 race victories in the IMSA series.

Two years later, Brumos scored outright victory at the 24 hours of Daytona in a Porsche Carrera RS leant by the Porsche factory. Vanquishing the formidable Penske team and several exotic prototypes, Brumos's immaculate preparation led to a giant killing performance for the team's white blue and red 911. Brumos erred from their patriotic colours for the final time at Sebring 1973. With their Daytona winner recalled to Stuttgart, a light yellow 911 Carrera RSR leant by Dr David Helmick provided a race winning machine for Gregg and Haywood.

With a total of 4 Daytona victories for Brumos Porsche, PorscheSport Esports hope to pay a fitting tribute to this all-star Porsche outfit in the upcoming VSCA SportsCar Championship by running the iconic white livery with blue and red stripe.

Hurley Haywood notched up four titles in the North American sports car series in the No. 59 Brumos Porsche. With five overall victories at Daytona to his credit, the 73-year-old from Chicago (USA) is the most successful Porsche endurance racer. As a former guest on the PorscheSport podcast, the Esports team wish to honour to Hurley’s achievements with Brumos and Porsche.

The VSCA SportsCar Championship, which includes the upcoming Daytona 24 Hours, is designed to emulate the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship as closely as possible, based on cars, classes, schedule and regulations. The inaugural season of the VSCA SportsCar Championship begins on January 22, 2022 at Daytona International Speedway. Three more endurance events at Sebring, Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta highlight the calendar. Rounding out the series schedule are four Sprint Cup events at Laguna Seca, Mid-Ohio, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and Road America.

As one of the rare exceptions among privately run sim racing leagues, VSCA runs all its series championships on calendar-year based schedules. The winter months are designed to provide organisers and teams with an extended offseason over the holidays and turn of the year. As of 2022, VSCA exclusively uses the iRacing Motorsports Simulator as the basis for all of its racing competitions.

The PorscheSport eSports team will run the Porsche GT3 R in the hotly contested GTD category. The driver line up features well known drivers along with some new team members for the upcoming 2022 season. New to the team is real world driver, 1996 Indianapolis 500 podium finisher, and Formula Atlantic champion, Richie Hearn. As an instructor at the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School, Richie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team and has his sights set on a strong performance all season. Current drivers Paul Riga, Peter Mackay, Carl Sharkey and Luke Holroyd will also feature throughout the season and look to bring their championship winning experience from the 2021 VEC endurances series. Also new to the team is real world Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain Driver Will Martin, fresh from a stellar performance in 2021. The future star in the Porsche world is keen to bring his talents across to the simulator this year, as well as continuing in the Carrera Cup Season.

“We are very much ready for the challenge ahead and we’re already on our way with race preparations. It made perfect sense for me to team up with the esports outfit from PorscheSport. Their commitment and approach to endurance racing is a perfect fit and I’m sure with our current roster of drivers, we can have a successful VSCA season.” - Richie Hearn

“Hurley Haywood, Peter Gregg and Brumos are all icons of the Porsche world. Therefore, to pay our respects to them by running the white, red and blue on our PorscheSport Esports 911 GT3 R is a real honour. Hurley, in particular, is a hero of mine and I hope we can replicate his success and grace in competition.” – Peter MacKay

"We couldn't be more excited about the new season and our first ever 24 Hours of Daytona organised by VSCA. If it will be as good as we hope it to be, we should be in for an amazing event. A lot of work has gone into it and a lot more work will need to get done until race day. But we're feeling great. The excitement level is high with everybody on the staff and we know the teams and drivers are excited, too." - VSCA spokesperson
