Despite Larry ten Voorde's fifth victory of the season, decision will be made in the final
Larry ten Voorde has taken a big step towards his third title in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: The Dutchman scored a lights-to-flag victory at his home race at the Circuit Zandvoort. This means that he goes into next weekend's finale in Monza with a lead of 20 points over Harry King. The Briton crossed the finish line in fifth place on the dune circuit on the North Sea coast.
The decision for the drivers' title in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup has been postponed to the finale in Monza, Italy (30 August to 1 September 2024). Larry ten Voorde celebrated his fifth win of the season in Zandvoort in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup of the Schumacher CLRT team. However, his pursuer Harry King, who drives for BWT Lechner Racing, kept his title chances alive with fifth place on the Dutch Grand Prix circuit. However, the Briton must win in Monza in any case, while ten Voorde would even be able to win the title in twelfth place. Marvin Klein also went into the seventh race of the season with title hopes. However, the Frenchman did not finish and can only become vice champion.
"This victory was still missing from my collection," Larry ten Voorde rejoiced. The 27-year-old has previously clinched 13 first places in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, but has actually not yet been able to celebrate one at his home race. "The whole team had to work hard for this. I didn't complete a fast lap in practice because of a technical problem. The mechanics had to change the engine overnight. In qualifying, I was right at the front. Now the victory - that's just unbelievable."
Second place went to Jaap van Lagen. The Dutchman had started the race from third position. "The decisive factor was that I was able to overtake Huub van Eijndhoven right after the start. After that, however, I had to survive two restarts after safety car phases – that was really nerve-wracking," described the Supercup veteran. The 47-year-old, who competes for the Italian team Dinamic Motorsport, was back on the podium for the first time since 2018.
Huub van Eijndhoven, ironically a former student of Jaap van Lagen, defended third place at the Circuit Zandvoort for a long time. It was only in the penultimate lap that Robert de Haan fought his way past his Dutch compatriot. However, the 18-year-old from the BWT Lechner Racing team was subsequently penalised and fell back to fourth place behind Van Eijndhoven. "If two drivers are allowed to finish ahead of me, it's Larry ten Voorde and Jaap van Lagen: I've learned everything I know about racing from them," said Van Eijndhoven
happily. The Briton had only started from ninth on the grid, but was able to quickly improve to fifth place with committed overtaking manoeuvres.
De Haan retained victory in the rookie classification. In the table, he reduced his gap to league leader Kas Haverkort to just six points. The Dutchman, who like Huub van Eijndhoven competes for Uniserver by Team GP Elite, finished sixth overall and second in the rookie classification. Frenchman Mathys Jaubert climbed onto the rookie podium in third place.
Schumacher CLRT is thus assured of the title in the team classification. The squad of Larry ten Voorde, Marvin Klein and Porsche Junior Alessandro Ghiretti travels to Monza with a 47-point lead over BWT Lechner Racing. There, a maximum of 45 points are still up for grabs in the team standings.
"The 2023 finale in Monza was nerve-wracking because almost after every lap an other driver was mathematically champion. Next week, we have a similarly exciting race ahead of us: In the drivers' and rookie classifications, the title duels are still open. This shows how strong the Supercup is again this season. My sincere congratulations already go to the Schumacher CLRT team for its first Supercup title," commented Oliver Schwab, Project Manager Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.
