Porsche Carrera Cup Asia kicks off 20-year anniversary celebrations back where it all started in Sepang

The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2023 season has offcially begun! Celebrating 20 years on the track in 2023, the series kicked off proceedings by heading back to the circuit where the story first began. 20 years ago, all the way back in 2003, the first ever Porsche Carrera Cup Asia race was held on Sepang International Circuit, beginning a journey that would see the series have a significant impact on motorsport throughout the whole region. 231 races, and over 198 competitors from 21 countries and regions later, the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia is now firmly established as the premier one-make series on the continent.

The stunning season ahead

Returning to international racing after a handful of seasons hampered by COVID restrictions, the series roars back into life this year with a stunning calendar, taking in a selection of Asia’s top tracks. Following the Official Test Days, the series stays in Sepang for the first two rounds, before heading off to Korea International Circuit. The next stop sees the series set off for Suzuka Circuit in Japan, before taking a trip to Thailand for a weekend at Chang International Circuit. One more stop at Sepang for Rounds 9 and 10, then the series heads to Marina Bay Street Circuit for the Singapore Grand Prix, before returning to China for the grand finale at Shanghai International Circuit alongside the Porsche Sports Cup China.

“With our Official Test Days, we have officially opened a new season for Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific.” Said Managing Director Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific Ltd. Mr. Alexandre Gibot “This is the Carrera Cup Asia’s 20-year anniversary season, we have a return to international racing with a selection of our favourite ever Carrera Cup Asia tracks, we have some fresh faces joining, and some veterans returning, and the stage is set for this to be our best season ever.”

Coming full circle: the return to Sepang

Spirits were high at the Official Test Days, with returning series veterans mingling with the newcomers who had made a name for themselves in the intervening years. The stars returning to the series this season include former three-time Carrera Cup Asia champion Chris van der Drift driving for Team Shanghai Yonda, as well as Porsche Holding’s Martin Ragginger – the man who has won more Carrera Cup Asia races than any other competitor. Driving for Modena Motorsport, John Shen returns to the series after a three year absence, with only two competitors in Carrera Cup Asia history having more race starts than him. We also have two brand new Pro drivers looking to make their mark on the series, with Nazim Azman – fresh from competing in F3 – driving for Sime Darby Racing Team and Florian Latorre – a Porsche Carrera Cup France alumnus – driving a Meidong Racing car. Showcasing Porsche’s commitment to cultivating local motorsport culture, we have Eric Zang joining the series this year with TORO Racing, having graduated from the Porsche Sports Cup China’s Sprint Challenge event, Eric is taking his next step up the Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific Pyramid on his journey to racing glory.

“Over the past two years, we have seen an influx of new drivers join the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia family.” Said Vice President Marketing Porsche China Mr. Sky Qiao “We have seen new dealer teams, new local race teams, and new champions, and this year we have an impressive 11 Dealer Teams coming from China alone. Porsche is a brand that is Driven by Dreams, and each year we see new drivers make their dreams come true. In 2023, the brand celebrates its 75th anniversary, the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia celebrates 20 years on the track, and the Porsche Sports Cup China celebrates its fifth season. I can’t wait to see the action this year, and to see both series join together in October for the Shanghai finale, which is poised to be one of our biggest motorsport events ever!”

The Porsche Dealer Trophy’s busiest season ever

The Porsche Dealer Trophy returns once again this year, with a bumper roster of competitors taking a shot at the title. This year we have a grand total of 13 Dealer Teams: Porsche Beijing Central & Goldenport, Team Shanghai Yonda, Team BetterLife, Meidong Racing, EBM Giga Racing, BD Group, TORO Racing, Team Jebsen, Shanghai Pudong & Waigaoqiao 69, Team C&D, Team Porsche Holding, Zheng Tong Auto and Sime Darby Racing Team.
