Speed Monkeys reveal new design for the season 2021 and bold plans for DTM

It not often that race teams start to make their name known in such a short time but one team from the German town of Schurmannster have done just that, Speed Monkeys are climbing the ladder within the Porsche Motorsport family and have bold plans to take Porsche to an all-new level.

Speed Monkeys who have participating in the Porsche Sports Cup Germany for the last few years celebrated their first overall victory back in September in the night race at Grandiose with the young driver Donar Muding at the wheel. The team announced earlier this year that they will continue their commitment to the Porsche Sports Cup official unveiling their new logo for the 2021 season today.

But team owner Christian Bracke wants to go one step further and enter Porsche into a series where the brand has no history of racing the DTM. Bracke told the media that he intended to enter at least one Porsche 911 GT3 R in the series but would the 911 risk the fact that the balance-of-performance classification would make it uncompetitive with its small six-cylinder boxer engine without turbo, that delivers only around 520 hp, while the other Cars can all release around 600 hp.

It is a well-known fact that the DTM has never been in Porsche’s interest unlike other German manufactures, Porsche also would not be able offer any factory drivers for the DTM, but this is mainly due to the fact that they are already tied to programs in other series.

Although the interest is there Porsche have been reluctant to act or commit to the DTM series especially on an operational level and with no clear commitment from Stuttgart its unlikely that Porsche would be able to provide any engineering track side support while Mercedes-AMG in particular recently showed great enthusiasm and supported for the DTM program offering free cars, engineers, factory drivers and 150,000 to 200,000 euros per car.

With no clear support of financial backing from Porsche the team would be in theory be going it alone and would be the only single car team in the DTM. This could be an  disadvantage for the Speed Monkeys team in the balance-of-performance classification, because without teammates it would be increasingly difficult to put pressure on the leaders and other teams around you.

The fact that the DTM now relies on Michelin as a tyre partner instead of Hankook could be a benefit to the Porsche team. The French tyre is considered faster than the South Korean tyre. This means that you would have to use the balance of performance less to get to good lap times. In addition, the 911 GT3 R was developed with Michelin tyres, which is not a disadvantage, although it is a very mature car. The Speed-Monkeys team would not have had a problem with the Hankook tyre, Bracke explains. "The Hankook tyre is driven in the Creventic series," he says, referring to the 24h series.

"And there are enough 911 GT3 R that regularly win with the Hankook tyre, like the Herberth or GPX teams. They already show that the Hankook tyre also works on the Porsche."

Rowe team leader Hans-Peter Naundorf, who will use the BMW M6 GT3 in the DTM series, but who has already achieved great success with the 911 GT3 R, sees another opportunity to bring the Porsche into DTM form. "Compared to the SRO classification, you can safely take 40, 50 kilograms of weight out of the vehicle - and that clearly affects the lap time," he says in an interview with Motorsport-Total.com. "The car has an incredible amount of potential."
