Proton Huber Competition celebrates double victory at season opener in Imola
Proton Huber Competition has had a successful race weekend. The Bavarian racing team won both races of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany in Imola and secured a podium finish in the 12-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps.
Proton Huber Competition has had an intense race weekend, with the racing team from Hofkirchen in Bavaria taking part in three race series. In addition to the season opener of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland in Imola, the team competed in the 12-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps and the season finale of the Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East in Jeddah.
"We have one of the biggest race weekends in the team's history behind us. We lined up in Imola with a truly impressive line-up. Our GT3 also competed in the 12-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps and we drove the season finale of the Carrera Cup Middle East in Jeddah. Many thanks to the entire team for their great performance, even though it was of course an extremely demanding weekend!’ said Christoph Huber, full of pride in his team.
As part of the FIA WEC support programme, the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland kicked off the new season in Imola, Italy. Proton Huber Competition fielded no fewer than seven Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. In addition to regular drivers Robert de Haan, Marvin Klein, Sacha Norden, Colin Jamie Bönighausen and Joseph Warhurst, the team supported the Swedish team Fragus Motorsport with Daniel Ros and Wilmer Wallenstan.
Fast Dutch youngster Robert de Haan, who is entering his first full season with the team, had a perfect weekend at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. De Haan took pole position for both races over the Easter weekend. The tall driver from Eerbeek delivered a flawless performance in both races. He defended his pole position at the start of each race and drove to overall victory in both half-hour races with controlled performances, putting him at the top of the overall standings in the traditional one-make series.
Marvin Klein also scored important points in Imola. The two-time French Carrera Cup champion finished fifth and third. Sacha Norden made a successful debut in the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany, winning the rookie classification on Saturday and finishing second on Sunday. This also puts Norden at the top of the sub-classification. Colin Jamie Bönighausen also scored points in the first race, finishing 13th, but missed out on points on Sunday after a collision. Joseph Warhurst scored important points in the rookie classification in both races.
‘What a fantastic start to the season in Imola! Our hard work over the past weeks and months has paid off,’ said Ajla Vukovic, who heads the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup line-up at Proton Huber Competition alongside Michael Dirsch. ‘Our goal before the season was to repeat last year's successes, and Robert's two race wins and Sacha's second place in the rookie classification – as well as the performances of our other drivers – make me very confident for the rest of the season. But we will continue to work hard, because there is always room for improvement.’
At the same time, the team took to the Ardennes rollercoaster at Spa-Francorchamps. Jörg Dreisow, Constantin Dressler, Manuel Lauck and Porsche contracted driver Klaus Bachler lined up in a Porsche 911 GT3 R for the 12-hour race in the Michelin 24H Series European Series. The team, which competed in the GT3 Pro-Am class, suffered a setback early on Saturday afternoon. After an accident, the Porsche fell far behind. But the team launched a spectacular comeback. After falling 22 laps behind at one point, the team was only eleven laps behind the class winner at the end of the race. The quartet was classified second in the GT3 Pro-Am class.
Christoph Huber: ‘I am proud of my team! After a heavy test accident on Monday, they rebuilt the car and didn't give up in the race after the setback. The reward is our first podium finish with the GT3 in the 24H Series. We will continue to fight in the upcoming races and hope to secure our first victory soon!’
Proton Huber Competition's extensive programme was rounded off by the season finale of the Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East on the street circuit in Jeddah. Krister Andero from Sweden flew the flag for the Bavarian racing team. The gentleman driver narrowly missed out on the podium in the Masters class in both races.
