Will Aspin claims second place finish at Silverstone in Porsche Carrera Cup GB

Will Aspin bounced back in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Silverstone, qualifying second in the Pro-Am class, and taking a podium in race two as he aims to end the 2023 season on a high.

The British/Italian youngster has endured a tough season with bad luck but resolved to turn things around at the home of the British Grand Prix. He was on the pace through Friday’s practices, confident for the rest of the weekend and putting in an excellent effort for the single qualifying session on Saturday. Topping the Pro-Am times in the closing stages but being bested by a miniscule 0.017s, he still finished an excellent sixth overall and second of the six Team Parker Racing entrants.

With the track mostly dry but drizzle in the air ahead of race one on Sunday, conditions were tricky for him as he started brilliantly on wet tyres, jumping forward, and battling for third overall. However, as the track dried out, those on slicks had the advantage and as his tyres gave up, he dropped down the order, crossing the line fifth in class.

Battling back in the second contest later that afternoon, Will put on a show, moving forward six places, and scything his way through the Pro-Am field, working hard to get past Ollie Jackson and move into the podium positions. Crossing the line third in Pro-Am, that became second after post-race penalties were applied, a fine reward for a strong drive.

There are just two races left to run in the 2023 Porsche Carrera Cup GB season, at Brands Hatch over the weekend of October 7/8, on the challenging Grand Prix circuit, with live coverage of both contests live on ITV4 in the United Kingdom.

“FP1 was good and realistic, I think, because where we were in the times was pretty accurate. FP2 was unrealistic because everyone was exceeding track limits, but overall, we still had really good pace compared to Adam [Smalley]. Going into qualifying I was confident, and it showed because we finished sixth overall and one place off the Pro-Am pole, but then again, we only used two sets of tyres in qualifying, whereas Oliver White used three.

“I felt pretty good starting sixth for race one, but there was a bit of a debatable decision whether to go on slicks or wets. We went for wets, which was the wrong decision, but it was just too late to change. As a whole team we've taken that on the chin and learned from it. In the race, we were running fourth overall but not surprisingly, we fell back all the way to 15th. It's a shame as it was one of those races which could have been something special and it could have set us up for a really good race two as well.

“Going into race two we started 15th and finished ninth – P2 in Pro-Am – but I think we could have had an overall podium if race one went our way. However, it is what it is and can't do anything about it. It's a really hard pill to swallow but we have to move on and focus on Brands Hatch.”
