George Gamble crowned 2024 Carrera Cup GB champion

George Gamble from Nottingham secured the Porsche Carrera Cup GB championship for 2024 in the final race of the season at Brands Hatch. Harry Foster from Basingstoke drove to victory in Round 15, finishing ahead of the four championship contenders: Gamble, Charles Rainford, Hugo Ellis, and Will Martin. In Round 16, Gamble overcame challenging wet weather conditions by producing a champions drive to victory from sixth on the grid.

Meanwhile, Angus Whiteside from Guildford raced to two Pro-Am podium results on the Grand Prix circuit, clinching the category championship battle in the final race of the season. Lee Mowle from London already secured the Am championship at Silverstone – he added two more category wins to his impressive tally in Kent. Team Parker Racing of Leicestershire signed off in style by sealing the championship for Entrants in one of the most closely contested seasons in Porsche history.

Foster and Gamble win in Pro
Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session took place in sunny conditions with Porsche Carrera Cup GB 2024 / 2025 Junior, James Wallis (JTR) staking an early claim on pole position. In the closing stages, Will Martin (Eden Race Drive) fended off a late charge from Hugo Ellis (Team Parker Racing) to take the top spot. The two points awarded for pole tied Martin and George Gamble (Rosland Gold By Century Motorsport) on points entering the penultimate race of the season.

Charles Rainford (Cognition Land & Water with CCK Motorsport) and Gamble made good starts at the beginning of the penultimate race of the season, but it was Martin who led as Rainford slotted into second. Ellis slipped back to third with Harry Foster (Eden Race Drive) in fourth. At the end of the opening lap, William Burns (Rosland Gold By Century Motorsport) spun at Clearways before continuing. As Martin pulled clear at the front of the race, Ellis closed on Rainford for second, and Foster was close behind. On lap five, Martin left the circuit at Paddock Hill Bend and ended his race in the gravel trap. Rainford assumed the lead with Ellis now second and Foster in third. Martin’s incident scrambled the Safety Car into action.

After the restart Ellis dived to the inside at Paddock Hill to lead, but an opportunistic Foster went to the outside at Druids giving him the inside line for Graham Hill Bend where he snatched the race lead. Rainford managed to repass Ellis, leaving the order as Foster from Rainford and Ellis, and that is how it stayed to the flag – Foster enjoyed his second overall win of the season. After the race, he drew the number five ball, reversing the top five grid positions for the weekend’s second race. The overall championship would be decided at the final race of the season.

Dan Lloyd (Toro Verde GT) started from reverse grid pole position for the season finale which took place in wet conditions. Lloyd led Ellis and Wallis through Paddock Hill Bend on the opening lap, and Rainford gave chase in third. Wallis instigated a move through Druids and Graham Hill to grab the race lead, leaving Lloyd second and Ellis in third. As Lloyd retaliated on Wallis, Gamble attacked Rainford for fourth, getting ahead at Paddock Hill. Foster briefly left the circuit at Graham Hill Bend before rejoining.

On lap four, Gamble continued his charge by passing Ellis for third in the run towards Clearways. As Ellis slipped backwards, Gamble closed on Lloyd and Wallis. On lap eight, Gamble made his next move, overtaking Lloyd on the inside at Sheene Curve for second. On lap 10, Gamble pressured leader Wallis – he moved to the inside at Clearways and completed the pass at Paddock Hill, grabbing the lead and therefore doing everything required to be crowned 2024 champion. Rainford fell back down the order, and Lloyd soon suffered the same fate – that allowed Stephen Jelley (Parker Classic Works) to advance to the final podium position.

Gamble crossed the finish line to take victory, clinching the 2024 Carrera Cup GB overall championship. He was joined on the Pro category podium by Wallis and Jelley, the latter making his first visit to the winner’s steps this season.

Whiteside takes Pro-Am plaudits
Sid Smith (Parker Classic Works) qualified ahead of his Pro-Am category rivals on Saturday afternoon, with title contender Angus Whiteside (Century Motorsport) directly behind on row five. Smith maintained his advantage over Whiteside at the start of Round 15. On lap five, Smith ran wide at the exit of Sheene Curve allowing Whiteside to get a run on him, however, the positions remained the same with Smith leading Whiteside from Will Aspin (Eden Race Drive) in third. Following the Safety Car period, Aspin was involved in a fight with Pro category racer, Andrew Rackstraw (JTR), but at the flag Smith was followed home by Whiteside, with Oliver White (Eden Race Drive) taking the final category podium place.

White led the Pro-Am category contenders at the start of the final race of the season, with Smith slotting into second and Aspin running in third. Later in the race, Ollie Jackson (JTR) advanced to the category lead as he engaged in a fight with Martin, Burns and Smith for twelfth overall. As the group traded blows, Jackson emerged ahead of White and Smith, and on lap nine Whiteside grabbed the final category podium spot. That is how the order would stay, and Whiteside’s result was enough to see him be crowned 2024 Pro-Am category champion.

Mowle enjoys two wins in Am
Lee Mowle (Team Parker Racing) qualified ahead of Richard Hosking (Cognition Land & Water with CCK Motorsport) at the start of Round 15, and his advantage was cemented when Hosking spun on the opening lap. Mowle was clear to finish ahead of Hosking, forming the first Am category podium of the Brands Hatch weekend. The final encounter was a similar affair – Mowle led Hosking from the outset despite tricky wet weather conditions, enjoying an unhindered run to the flag.

Following the final weekend of the season, Porsche Carrera Cup GB will crown its champions at the annual Porsche Night of Motorsport in November. And Porsche will soon look ahead to the 2025 season, which commences at Donington Park in April with a full calendar of 16 races taking place across eight weekends.
