Huber Racing with overtaking show at Zandvoort
The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup returned from its summer break at the big Formula 1 party in Zandvoort. Huber Racing from Hofkirchen in Bavaria brought five Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars to the start on the world-famous dune circuit in front of more than 300,000 spectators. Alongside Simone Iaquinta and five-time motorbike world champion Jorge Lorenzo, the two local heroes Daan Meijer and the just 17-year-old Flynt Schuring, who was the youngest driver in the Supercup field, drove for Huber Racing. Bashar Mardini - a Kuwait-born Canadian who lives in the United Arab Emirates and competes under licence from the Arab nation - made his second guest start in the top-class one-make cup for Huber Racing.
On the circuit not far from the North Sea coast, the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup completed a special race format. Since the season opener in Imola, Italy, had to be cancelled in May due to the flood disaster, the Porsche one-make cup held one race each at Zandvoort on Saturday and Sunday. After a difficult qualifying on a wet track, the drivers of the Bavarian team had to start a race to catch up as Iaquinta was the best Huber driver in 18th position. Flynt Schuring even had to start the two races from the last grid position after an accident in qualifying. Daan Meijer did not qualify for the two race heats in the difficult conditions.
In the first race late on Saturday afternoon, Italian Simone Iaquinta showed a spectacular recovery. On the traditional circuit, the two-time champion of the Italian Porsche Carrera Cup fought his way up from 18th on the grid to eleventh. Iaquinta showed spectacular overtaking manoeuvres during the race, which thrilled the numerous fans. Jorge Lorenzo and the talented youngster Flynt Schuring also provided action. From starting positions 24 and 30, the two Huber drivers finished in 16th and 17th place.
In the second race on Sunday afternoon, the drivers of the Bavarian Porsche team also showed a lot of fighting spirit. Simone Iaquinta also impressed on Sunday with a strong recovery. In the race, he again advanced from 18th on the grid to eleventh place. Iaquinta missed a top 10 result by a hair's breadth. Jorge Lorenzo and Flynt Schuring finished the race in 21st and 24th place after tough battles and a team-internal collision. After retiring from the race on Saturday, Bashar Mardini finished in 27th position despite a collision at the start.
Luca Rettenbacher, who has temporarily taken over the team management of Huber Racing: "Unfortunately, qualifying was difficult for us, so we had to start the two races from further back. In the two races our drivers started strong and spectacular catch-up races, which I am very happy about. Simone narrowly missed out on the top 10 in both races and Flynt also had a strong debut in the Porsche Supercup, which we are very happy about."
The season finale of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup already takes place next week. The one-make cup will start in Northern Italy on the high-speed circuit of the Royal Park of Monza.
