Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and Sports Cup China conclude 2023 season with superb Shanghai finale

The 2023 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season came to a thrilling conclusion at Shanghai International Circuit, with Florian Latorre securing the title in his debut year in the championship for Meidong Racing.

The Frenchman took second place in Race 1, which was enough to claim the championship with a race to spare, despite title rival Team Shanghai Yonda’s Chris van der Drift scoring victory, while Martin Ragginger grabbed third for Porsche Holding.

On Sunday, Luo Kailuo ended the campaign with his fifth victory of the year for TORO Racing, ahead of van der Drift and Latorre.

Champion Bao Jinlong completed a stunning year in the Pro-Am category, with another double victory for Zheng Tong Auto. He was joined on the podium by Porsche Beijing Central & Goldenport’s Zhou Bihuang and TORO Racing’s Eric Zang on Saturday, while Hong Shijie for Team C&D and Team Betterlife’s Li Chao claimed silverware in Race 2.

Finally, in the Am category, Ruoyu Yang topped off his championship win with his seventh victory of the season on Saturday for BD Group. Li Xuanyu took a third place and a victory to secure second in the standings for Z Speed Motorsport, two points ahead of R&B Racing’s Wu Jiaxin, who also made two trips to the podium. Jacky Wu picked up his second top-three result of the season with second in the final event of the year for Shanghai Pudong & Waigaoqiao 69 Racing.

2023 saw the announcement of a partnership between Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific and the Technology Transfer Apprenticeship Programme (TTAP), which placed 15 apprentices amongst PCCA race teams. The first year of the collaboration came to a successful conclusion in Shanghai, with Ickx and Dumas presenting a certificate to the TTAP to mark the occasion. The project aims to develop local talent within the motorsport industry, and has been working with Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific throughout 2023.

Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific held its Season 2024 Formation Lap to present and announce the calendar and further information of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia to the customers and teams. The campaign will be bookended by visits to Shanghai, with trips to Suzuka, Buriram, Bangsaen, Sepang and Singapore all planned. The 2024 season will also feature two endurance races for customers and guest participants to compete in.

Porsche Sports Cup China also ended its fifth season in fantastic style at the same venue, as visits from six-times Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx, two-times Le Mans Winner Romain Dumas and Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific Selected Driver Yifei Ye made for an even more special weekend. The weekend featured over 400 Porsches on site, more than 1,400 guests joining the event and with 212 Porsche cars taking part in the highly popular Porsche Parade.

Porsche enthusiasts were able to enjoy a host of programmes on offer, with the popular Introduction to Racetrack, Driver’s Competition and Porsche Sprint Challenge China all in action. Race 1 of the Sprint Challenge China saw TORO Racing’s Heng Min take victory, ahead of BD Group’s Bo Hu and Ke Yang for Shanghai Yongda 69 Racing. Shanghai Pudong & Waigaoqiao 69 Racing’s Jeffrey Zee topped the podium in Race 2, with Min and Bo claiming their second podiums of the weekend. Meanwhile, in the GT4 category, SilverRocket Racing’s Archer Wu and Yuanlin Yu for Climax Racing secured one win apiece. With the 2023 season concluded, the Dealer Trophy for GTC was taken by Shanghai Pudong & Waigaoqiao with Porsche Holding securing the GT4 title.

Jacky Ickx: “20 years of Porsche Carrera Cup Asia is an incredible milestone and one to be hugely proud of. The fact that it’s also Porsche’s 75th anniversary made this event in Shanghai incredibly special. It was a pleasure to be here, to witness the brilliant racing surrounded by people who are so enthusiastic about the Porsche brand. A lovely weekend, beautifully organised and unforgettable.”

Romain Dumas: “It was a very good weekend and I was hugely impressed by the level of competition. Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific and Porsche Carrera Cup Asia have done an amazing job to organise this event, it was really exciting and I can’t wait to be back again. It was also great to spend time with Yifei, he’s very impressive as a person and as a driver and I’m sure he will continue on his upward journey with Porsche.”

Yifei Ye, Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific: “It was an awesome weekend in Shanghai, getting to watch the final round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia campaign and witnessing the crowning of the champions. There’s a lot of talent in the Asia Pacific region and plenty of bright futures! It was also great to be back with Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific in China and to see the fans and emotions of the weekend. I’m now looking forward to my last race of the season in Bahrain and will try to do a good job to reward all those who have supported me so much this season!”

Alexandre Gibot, Managing Director Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific Ltd.: “What a weekend! The atmosphere of the whole event in Shanghai was exactly what Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and Porsche Sports Cup China deserved for the final event of their respective seasons. To welcome 1,400 participants and guests, and to see over 400 Porsche cars join us on site was really special. What made an already excellent event even better was to have the presence of great friends of Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific, Jacky Ickx, Romain Dumas and our Selected Driver Yifei Ye join us, and spend time both on and off track with our customers and enthusiasts. I’d also like to extend my congratulations to the Carrera Cup Asia and Sprint Challenge China champions on their well-deserved titles in their respective series – the level of competition was very high and every single participant can be proud of their efforts this year. We are now already hard at work preparing for the Carrera Cup Asia’s 21st season next year and the 6th running of the Sports Cup China. However, 2023 isn’t over for Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific yet! Next up we have the final GT Track Day event of the year in Zhuhai, before the FIA Macau GT World Cup takes place at the iconic Guia Circuit, with our customers ready to battle at the 70th running of the incredible Macau Grand Prix!”
