Porsche Carrera Cup Asia ready to reignite championship battle on the streets of Singapore

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will once again support the Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit this weekend, as the penultimate round of the series provides huge opportunities to those involved in title battles.

Fresh off the back of a first Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup win at Monza at the start of the month, Alessandro Ghiretti comes to Singapore hoping to extend his 20-point lead at the top of the standings.

The Team Jebsen driver has been kept honest by TORO Racing’s Mathys Jaubert, who stood on the podium in all three races last time out in Sepang. Dylan Pereira (Shanghai Yonda Team BWT) will also be looking to continue his strong form which saw him clinch victory under the lights in Malaysia last month.

Marco Giltrap (Team Porsche New Zealand) secured his first top-three finish of 2024 in the opening race in Malaysia, while Martin Ragginger took his #86 Porsche Holding onto the podium for the third time this campaign.

In the Pro-Am class, Bao Jinlong maintained his advantage in the championship, meaning that the Phantom Global Racing driver could win a fifth title this weekend if results go his way.

The battle for second place is heating up with Li Xuanyu (Z SPEED Motorsport) currently occupying that position in the standings. However, Eric Zang (TORO Racing) took maximum points in two of the races around the Sepang International Circuit, to close in on Xuanyu, while Team Betterlife’s Li Chao sits just behind Zang in fourth.

Finally, the Am category in Malaysia saw the renewal of the epic battle between Bergwerk Motorsport’s Eric Kwong and Munkong Sathienthirakul of EBM Giga Racing. Kwong would come out on top twice with Sathienthirakul winning the second race, as Henry Kwong (Triple Ace Racing) finished third in all three rounds.

Porsche Sprint Trophy Thailand driver Simon Chan will make his series debut in the #969 Porsche Own Retail 69 Team, as Anderson Tanoto He (Trans-China Automotive Racing) deputises in place of Francis Tjia for this weekend’s action. The only female racer on the grid, Zhu Zhiyao, also returns in the #33 R&B Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (992).

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will also host their Formation Lap event on Friday morning in Singapore, when plans for the 2025 season will be shared.

The Marina Bay Street Circuit is a 4.94-kilometere track which has played host to the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and the Singapore Grand Prix since 2008. The tight track, combined with 19 corners at high speed in very humid weather conditions, make the circuit one of the most difficult challenges around the globe.

On-track action begins on Friday at 14:10 local time for Free Practice. Qualifying gets underway at 13:50 on Saturday with lights out for Race 1 at 16:10. Sunday’s event takes place at 16:40 and both races will be available to watch live on the Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific YouTube channel.

Alessandro Ghiretti, Team Jebsen: “It was amazing to take my first ever Mobil 1 Porsche Supercup victory at Monza and that certainly means that I’m confident coming into this weekend. It’s always special when you get the opportunity to drive on a street circuit, so it’s a challenge I look forward to facing. I’m taking it one race at a time and hopefully by the end of the next five races we’ll be on top, but right now it’s just about focusing on this round in Singapore.”

Eric Zang, TORO Racing: “It’s my second season in the series and I’m getting more and more comfortable with the unique dynamics of this car. I’ve always loved the iconic Marina Bay Street Circuit, the skyscrapers, bridges, the heat and humidity make it one of a kind. We’ve still got five races to go and we’re in a great battle for second place, so we just have to take it one race at a time and hopefully we can enjoy another strong weekend here.”

Simon Chan, Porsche Own Retail Team 69 Team: “It’s been a long-term ambition to compete in Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, and now the opportunity has arisen so I’m looking forward to the challenge. It’s an amazing place to make your series debut because it’s one of the most exciting events on the calendar. The field in the Am class has been very competitive this season, therefore I’ll focus on my own pace. I’ve raced here before, so I’m not a complete stranger to the track. It’ll be an interesting weekend and a learning experience which I can’t wait for.”

Alexandre Imperatori, Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Manager: “We’re delighted to be here as a support for the Singapore Grand Prix, we’ve been since the first race in 2008. It’s a busy weekend for us with the Formation Lap event on Friday morning when we’ll confirm our plans for the 2025 season. We’re pleased to have Porsche Asia Pacific in attendance supporting Sime Darby and Porsche New Zealand as well. After the success of the Endurance Cup opener last time, we’re hoping to see even more amazing action at one of the most testing venues in the world.”
