Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific customers return to racing in new GT Super Sprint Challenge series

With Chinese motorsport back in full swing, four Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific customers will contest the inaugural round of the brand new GT Super Sprint Challenge (GTSSC) at the Shanghai International Circuit. Open to GT4, GTC, GT3 and GT2 cars, the series provides bronze drivers with two 27-minute sprint races on five weekends at three Chinese venues: Shanghai, Zhuzhou and Ningbo. Porsche will be represented in all three classes that are competing at this weekend’s curtain raiser.

Chinese superstar Kris Wu will make his first race appearance as the Porsche China Motorsport Representative. After debuting at last year’s Porsche Sports Cup China in the GT4 category, Wu will compete in the #911 Porsche 911 GT3 R for the first time for his newly launched 20XX Racing team, which will also debut in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia in Shanghai this weekend.

Also racing in the GT3 class with the previous generation #51 Porsche 911 GT3 R (991.1) is YC Racing’s Xiao Min, returning to the track after a stint in the China GT Championship in 2018.

In addition to running 20XX Racing’s GTSSC activities this weekend, Absolute Racing fields the #3 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport with first-time racer Chiu Liang, who will also make an appearance in the Porsche Sprint Challenge China later this year.

Following up on its Porsche Sprint Challenge China outings in 2020, 69 Racing Team makes its return to open championship competition with Yang Ke in the #69 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (991.2).

Ingo Matter, Absolute Racing Team Director: “We are happy to join GT Super Sprint Challenge, it’s great to have a championship purely for amateur drivers in China. You don't see short races without driver changes in a multi-manufacturer GT series very often. This will be a good platform for drivers to learn and gain experience. We are proud of our history and results and we have proven that we can race at the top, take wins and fight for championships at any level. In saying that, we never underestimate the competition. It will be a pleasure to work with Kris and Chiu and help them with their long-term ambitions.”

Alexandre Gibot, Head of Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific: “We’re very excited to see open championship racing return in China. The GT Super Sprint Challenge offers a fantastic platform for amateur racers to hone their skills and move up the motorsport ladder, which perfectly reflects what we are trying to do at Porsche in the region. Having at least one car in each class this weekend shows the breadth of racing that our customers take part in and that we can make every driver’s dream a reality, regardless of skill level. We look forward to seeing the series kick off this weekend.”
