Robert Dahlgren to dive in Porsche Carrera Cup as preparation for a new title hunt in STCC
It will be star-studded in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia 2024. Especially in Porsche Experience Racing. In addition to Prince Carl Philip, a group of well-known and qualified drivers will represent the team during the season. One was present during Monday's test at Gelleråsen Arena in Karlskoga: four-time STCC champion Robert Dahlgren!
Porsche Experience Racing has entered two Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (992) for this year's edition of the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. One (#13) for Prince Carl Philip, who is registered for the entire championship, and the other (#911) for the team's pool of drivers, where one or more may also be considered as a replacement for the prince when he is unable to participate due to other commitments.
For Robert Dahlgren, 44 years old, it will be his debut in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. After his successful single-seater career, which among other things resulted in a highly meritorious title in British Formula Ford, the northerner has mostly been associated with Cupra, Volvo and Seat. This is regardless of whether he has competed in STCC, WTCC or V8 Supercars.
"I've never driven a Porsche in a racing context before," says Dahlgren, who thinks the opportunity to do so is particularly well chosen.
"Perfect as preparation for the STCC season, especially considering that there was not a single race for me last year.
510 horsepower, tail engine and rear-wheel drive. Different from what the racing star from Skellefteå has been used to for most of his successful career.
"Absolutely, but the new STCC car with rear-wheel drive and a lot of power is more like a Porsche now than it has ever been before. Porsche is the closest I can drive here in Sweden to get up to speed for the STCC, which is my main focus in 2024.
Although Dahlgren's goal this season is to win the STCC for a fifth time, and thus move up to joint lead with Richard Göransson in the statistics of most titles, he does not lack ambition with his involvement in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. Far from it.
"I am fully aware that the Carrera Cup is a strong championship with many talented and experienced drivers. But even though the competition is tough and I don't give myself the best conditions – haven't driven a race car for a year and a half and never driven a Porsche before – I obviously want to be competitive. And I don't live in the belief that I'm going to qualify first and win races. That's not the case, but I want to be somewhere up there anyway," says Dahlgren, admitting with a smile.
"I actually felt a little butterflies in my stomach when I rolled out on the first session this morning. That was a long time ago.
Robert Dahlgren's participation in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia is possible thanks to a collaboration with PWR Racing, part of the PWR Group, the team for which the northerner has won all four of his STCC titles and for whom he will also compete this year.
"I think it's good that we in Swedish racing can help each other as much as possible. For Robban, this will be good training and preparation for the STCC season. Our attitude is that all driving is good driving," says team manager Marcus Ekström.
Thomas Johansson, manager and sporting director of Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia, is also very positive about the deal.
"It's great that we can find collaborations between classes and organizations in this way, and that this year it suits PWR and Robert Dahlgren with a commitment to our championship alongside their investment in the STCC. We welcome Dahlgren and look forward to seeing him on the track in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (992)," said Johansson.
How many appearances and exactly which races Robert Dahlgren will drive in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia this season has not yet been decided. What is clear, however, is that he will also participate in the championship's official roll-out in Karlskoga on April 23-24.
