5,000th Cup nine-eleven becomes VIP car in the Porsche Supercup

At Porsche in Zuffenhausen, the 2022,5th one-make cup racing car based on the Porsche 000 rolled off the assembly line at the end of November 911. It all began in 1990 with the vehicles for the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. Since then, the Cup nine-eleven has developed into one of the world's most-built racing cars. The anniversary model will be used in the Porsche Mobil 2023 Supercup in the 1 season: Porsche Motorsport will make the 375 kW (510 hp) Porsche 911 GT3 Cup available to prominent guest starters at selected races.

The participation of a VIP vehicle has a long tradition in the Porsche Supercup. In the 2023 season, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, which will be driven by prominent guest starters at selected rounds of the international one-make cup, is a very special one: the 5,000th racing car built on the basis of a Porsche 911 for a one-make cup. This is indicated by the special livery with which the starting number 911 stands out from the field of around 30 participants in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup.

"More than 5,000 Cup nine-eleven – this impressive number symbolises the great success of our worldwide Porsche one-make cups like no other. It also stands for the high level of acceptance that Porsche enjoys among teams as well as among racing professionals, young drivers and amateur racing drivers worldwide. No other Porsche race car was produced in large numbers or used more frequently," commented Oliver Köppen, Head of One-Make Cups and GT Racing, Porsche Motorsport Sales.

What began in 1990 in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland with the first Cup nine-eleven is now a success story with a total of 34 one-make cups sanctioned by Porsche worldwide. From the Weissach Development Center, the Cup idea has conquered almost all continents over the decades. Porsche Carrera Cups are currently held in Europe, America, Asia and Australia. Since 1993, the international Porsche Supercup has been at the top, which will compete in eight European Formula 1 races in 2023.

"Since the premiere of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland in April 1990, Porsche's one-make cups have made a truly impressive development. In the current season, the number has risen to 34 series worldwide, almost all of which use the current Porsche 911 GT3 Cup of the 992 model generation. This success was largely shaped by our customer teams, to whom I would like to express my special thanks," affirms Michael Dreiser, Head of Porsche Motorsport Sales.

From closeness to series production to thoroughbred GT racing cars
There was a clear strategy behind the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland in 1990: production technology was to prove itself on the race track, and all Cup vehicles were built centrally by Porsche. The basic vehicle was the Porsche 911 Carrera RS (Generation 964). For use in the one-make cup, it was modified with little more than safety equipment, sports suspension and racing exhaust system.

Above all, the introduction of ever more extensive safety regulations and the internationalisation of the one-make cup concept meant that the Cup nine-eleven changed more and more into a thoroughbred racing car from model generation to model generation. The current Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (model series 992) has, among other things, a computer-calculated safety cell, a sequentially shifted transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel, body and cockpit components made of carbon fibre and a rear wing adjustable in eleven positions.

However, production GT3 and GT3 Cup still share many technical components. For example, the six-cylinder boxer engine remains almost identical, apart from details such as the racing exhaust system and special engine electronics. The unchanged output of 375 kW (510 hp) means, among other things, that the VIt is not necessary to routinely overhaul the naturally aspirated engine during an entire Supercup or Carrera Cup season.

The worldwide success story of Porsche's one-make cups and the associated high quantities of Cup vehicles require a unique production process. The racing cars developed by Porsche Motorsport in Weissach roll off the assembly line at the main plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen side by side with 911 production models. The production of a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup takes just under eight hours – another record.

All generations of the Cup nine-eleven: Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cup (964) Base: Porsche 911 Carrera RS
Debut: 1990 (Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland) Displacement: 3.6 liters
Power: 195 kW (265 hp) to 202 kW (275 hp)

Road and racing cars differed only slightly. The standard Porsche 911 Carrera RS was lightened by the comfort equipment and received in addition to roll cage, bucket seat, suspender belts and sports suspension also racing tires, a modified brake system and a sports exhaust. A differential lock and a shorter ratio in gears three to five were also added. ABS and three-way catalytic converter were retained.

Porsche 911 Cup (993) Basis: Porsche 911 Carrera RS
Debut: 1994 (Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland) Displacement: 3.8 litres
Power: 228 kW (310 hp) to 232 kW (315 hp)

Quantity: 186

One of the most important innovations compared to the Type 964 was the multi-link rear axle. This was followed in 1995 by a larger, fixed rear wing as well as the side skirts and front spoiler of the production model Carrera RS.

Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (996) Base: Porsche 911 GT3 Debut: 1998 (Porsche Supercup) Displacement: 3.6 litres
Power: 265 kW (360 hp) to 287 kW (390 hp) Quantity: 873

The third generation Cup nine-eleven was powered for the first time by a water-cooled six-cylinder engine, whose output gradually increased from 265 kW (360 hp) to 287 kW (390 hp). This model generation also underwent several aerodynamic developments: from 2001, a massive rear wing doubled downforce on the rear axle, and from 2002 it was adjustable in seven stages. The teardrop-shaped headlights of the Porsche 911 Turbo also provided a new look.

Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (997) Basis: Porsche 911 GT3 and GT3 RS
Debut: 2005 (Porsche Supercup) Displacement: 3.6 – 3.8 litres
Power: 294 kW (400 hp) to 331 kW (450 hp)

Quantity: 1,485

The new front end with adjustable spoiler and the larger rear wing generated around 40 percent more downforce than the predecessor model. The evolution model from 2010 was based on the production model 911 GT3 RS and received its body and 3.8-liter engine.

The 911 GT3
Cup of the 991.1 model generation was the first one-make cup vehicle from Porsche to feature paddle shifting on the steering wheel. A newly developed roll cage and a rescue hatch in the roof increased safety.

Like the production model, the Cup
nine-eleven also received the newly developed six-cylinder boxer engine with a displacement of four litres from 2017.

Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (992) Base: Porsche 911 GT3 Cup
Debut: 2021 (Porsche Supercup) Displacement: 4.0 litres
Power: 375 kW (510 hp) Quantity: 782 (until March 2023)

The visual distinguishing feature of the current model series is the widened body of the Porsche 911 Turbo with adjustable spoiler lip at the front and rear wing with gooseneck suspension. The cockpit is fully digital for the first time. The four-litre boxer engine, whose output now reaches 375 kW (510 hp), is designed for the use of synthetic fuel.
