Best time in qualifying for Harry King, pole position for Marvin Klein

Harry King was fastest in a qualifying of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup for the first time in Monza, Italy. However, due to a penalty from the previous race at Zandvoort, the Briton will only start the last race of the 2022 season from fourth place. Instead, pole position goes to Frenchman Marvin Klein, second fastest in qualifying. The three title contenders, Dylan Pereira from Luxembourg, Larry ten Voorde from the Netherlands and Porsche Junior Laurin Heinrich from Germany, secured grid positions three, five and seven. The Supercup season finale will be held as part of the Italian Grand Prix and will begin on Sunday (September 11) at 11:50 am.

Championship leader Dylan Pereira is one step closer to his first title in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. The Luxembourger from the BWT Lechner Racing team will start the season finale of the international one-make cup from third place in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, ahead of his two title rivals. Dutchman Larry ten Voorde from the GP Elite team, Supercup champion for the past two years, was fifth fastest in qualifying. Porsche Junior Laurin Heinrich from Germany qualified seventh on the grid in the approximately 375 kW (510 hp) Porsche 911 GT3 Cup fielded by SSR Huber Racing.

"Winning is not my goal, I just can't afford to drop out. I have teammates around me on the starting grid as bodyguards, it doesn't get much better than that,” points' leader Pereira looks ahead to the 15-lap race on Sunday. "It will be very difficult for me. But I'll try everything," Larry ten Voorde said. The second in the table must be at least second in the final race in order to be able to catch Pereira at all. Laurin Heinrich, on the other hand, will probably concentrate on catching ten Voorde in the duel for second place. “With the first set of tires I was at the front for a long time. When some were even faster with fresh tires, I lacked a good slipstream at the decisive moment,” reported the Porsche Junior, who started the finale in third place overall, but only has a slim chance of winning the title.

Fastest in qualifying was Harry King from the BWT Lechner Racing team. “I've come close a couple of times this season. I saved the best for last. It's really a shame that I can't start the race from pole position," commented the Brit. Due to a collision at the last Supercup race in Zandvoort, King has been penalized. In the starting line-up in Monza he is therefore demoted to fourth place.

As a result, pole position goes to Marvin Klein, who finished qualifying second fastest. “In Zandvoort I won from pole position. I hope I can do that here in Monza as well,” said the Frenchman from Team CLRT with confidence. The Danish rookie Bastian Buus from the BWT Lechner Racing team secured third place on the grid. On the third row next to Larry ten Voorde is another rookie, Dutchman Loek Hartog, who drives for the Italian team Ombra.

The math behind the title decision
Before the last race of the year, championship leader Dylan Pereira has an 18-point lead over Larry ten Voorde. Porsche Junior Laurin Heinrich follows in third place, two points behind. So Ten Voorde has to win the final (25 points) or finish second (20 points) to be able to catch Pereira at all. Heinrich only has a chance if he wins.

If ten Voorde wins, Pereira is champion if he finishes no worse than ninth (7 points). For a second rank for ten Voorde, Pereira needs at least rank 14 (2 points). If Pereira and ten Voorde have the same number of points, the title would go to Pereira because he would have won one more win of the season (3:2).

With Heinrich's second win of the season, Pereira wins the title if he finishes no worse than 11th (5 points). Second place for Heinrich and a clear round for Pereira – and no win for ten Voorde – would mean a tie on points. In this case, Pereira would still be the 2022 Supercup champion due to the higher number of wins this season (3:1).

If Dylan Pereira does not score any points on Sunday, Larry ten Voorde would definitely win his third title in a row with a win. Second place would also be enough for the Dutchman if Heinrich doesn't win.
