Carrera Cup Scandinavia presents its plans for 2022!
May 7-8, the first competition of the year in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia was decided. Now the championship presents its plans for 2022! New car, Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (992), calendar with a race on a Formula 1 track in Europe, special investment in the Porsche Approved Cup and a total prize pool of SEK 650,000 are some of the news.
Less than two weeks after this year's premiere, the championship now announces the plans for 2022, which can be considered extremely unique in a racing context and which of course creates security, not least for all the championship's customers. Earlier this week, Raine Wermelin, CEO of Porsche Sweden, presented several news ahead of 2022 at a digital meeting for teams and drivers. Among other things, a preliminary calendar was published which, in addition to competitions in Sweden and Norway, also contains a partial competition on a Formula 1 track somewhere in Europe. In 2018, the Scandinavian championship hosted the Nürburgring, where they competed together with the drivers in the German Carrera Cup championship. The initiative was much appreciated.
The Nürburgring is an option for next season as well, but we are also looking at courses such as Hockenheim, Red Bull Ring, Zandvoort, Spa and Silverstone, says Thomas Johansson, sporting director for the championship.
Regardless of which track and in which context it will eventually be, this time we will run two own races. This is partly because we want to be able to offer all our drivers a place, regardless of which generation Porsche 911 GT3 Cup they drive, new (992) or the one we compete with today (991 II).
New European Adventure The
The calendar for 2022 comprises a total of six races and a total of 15 races, the largest number since the 2013 season. After a roll-out at Mantorp Park in April, the premiere awaits at Gelleråsen Arena in Karlskoga 13-14 May and Scandinavian Raceway in Anderstorp 17 -June 18. Drivecenter Arena in Fällfors is back in the calendar and will be decided July 22-23.
Then it's time for the European Adventure 12-13 August before the championship ends at Rudskogen Motorsenter in Norway 16-17 September and at Mantorp Park at the turn of the month September / October.
In Anderstorp, at Drivecenter Arena and in Norway we will run three races. In other sub-competitions, there will be two, says Johansson, who also points out that the calendar is preliminary for the time being and that it will be so until the Formula 1 calendar is nailed down this autumn. The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is a support class at the F1 competitions in Europe and they can and do not want to clash with the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. The broadcasts of Formula 1 also affect the collaboration with Viaplay, which will broadcast from all races in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia also in 2022. It is already clear.
650,000 in the prize pool
With the introduction of the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (992) with 510 horsepower, an extra investment is made in the Porsche Approved Cup, the championship in the championship that in 2022 will apply to the cars that operate the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia this year (991 II). Porsche Sweden offers drivers in the Porsche Approved Cup a lower start fee when registering no later than December 10, tire support in the form of free racing tires and a separate prize pool of SEK 150,000 to the winner of the cup.
This increases the total prize money in the championship from SEK 500,000 to SEK 650,000. Just like this year, the top trio in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia will also share SEK 350,000 (SEK 200,000, SEK 100,000 and SEK 50,000) in 2022, and in the team championship, which includes the Porsche Approved Cup, the winning team can receive SEK 150,000.
With the investment in the Porsche Approved Cup, we want, among other things, to keep up the interest in, and the value of, the cars. We also want to create an economically interesting elite racing alternative and an attractive entry into the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia, says Raine Wermelin.
The goal is that along with twelve new cars will roll 8-10 Porsche GT3 Cup (991 II) in the championship next season.
For 2022, we aim for 20-22 cars in total, the level we were at before the pandemic. By 2023, the goal is 24-26 cars, says Wermelin.
