Edgerton kick-starts season in style at Thruxton

Porsche Visit Cayman Islands Sprint Challenge GB entered its second season at Thruxton – the fastest circuit in the UK, taking up a position as part of the TOCA package running in support of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) with live television coverage on ITV4. Following a successful introduction in 2020, the championship continued to showcase an important level in the Porsche Motorsport Pyramid, with both Am and Pro categories.

Wet conditions in qualifying resulted in an unusual grid order for the weekend's first race with two Am category drivers on the front row. Theo Edgerton (TCR) beat the conditions and his rivals to win Saturday's race, the 17-year old replicated that success in Sunday's dry race to stamp his intentions on the 2021 championship. However, returnee Ethan Hawkey (Team Parker Racing) and newcomer Jack Bartholomew (Redline Racing) gave chase to join Edgerton on the Pro category podium. Championship returnee Ian Humphris (Valluga) took pole position and two Am category wins during the Thruxton weekend to start his season in the best possible way.

Qualifying
Saturday's 30-minute qualifying session was conduced in wet conditions, as a result the grid of 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport cars all ran grooved wet weather Michelin tyres. Edgerton was the early pacesetter with fellow Pro category drivers Charles Clark (IN2 Racing) and newcomer Bartholomew in close company. In Am, Humphris made his intentions clear early on, the returnee initially led reigning category champion Ambriogio Perfetti (IN2 Racing) from Nigel Rice (Redline Racing).

Following a natural break in the action at the mid-point of the session, the drivers returned to the track on fresh grooved tyres – several improved their lap times. With less than 10 minutes of the session remaining the experienced Rice moved to the top of the timesheet with a 1:22.709, that benchmark was soon surpassed by Humphris who lapped 0.359 seconds faster to secure provisional pole position. In the closing stages of the session Edgerton was one of several drivers to further improve, he would finish qualifying as the top Pro in P3 with Clark in P4 finalising a topsy turvy grid.

For recording the fastest times in their respective categories, Edgerton – Pro and Humphris – Am each received one championship point.

Race one The first of the weekend's two races took place on Saturday, mixed weather conditions saw the cars undertake two green flag laps so that drivers could familiarise themselves with the challenging conditions. Humphris and Rice made clean getaways from the front row at the start, just behind, Edgerton and Clark got slightly better traction to advance on the two Am drivers ahead. In his attempt to avoid an incident with teammate Clark early into the opening lap, Perfetti left the circuit and made contact with the barriers, ending his race on the grass. By the end of the first lap Edgerton was leading from Humphris and Rice, however, Ethan Hawkey (Team Parker Racing) was the driver on the move – he gained four places to sit fourth. By lap two the fast starting Hawkey was up to P3, Clark mounted a successful pass on Rice at the Club chicane for P4. Wasting little time, Hawkey moved up again, this time to second and set his sights on leader Edgerton. Soon the pair were trading fastest lap times as they got to grips with a drying track surface. On lap 4 Clark found a way by Humphris for P3, Humphris maintained his Am category lead from Rice and Peter Chambers (Redline Racing). Rice soon closed in on Humphris but could not find a route through. On lap 7 rain began to fall making parts of the track exceptionally slippery, newcomer Jack Bartholomew (Redline Racing) began to improve, the Pro category driver moved to P5 splitting the battling Humphris and Rice. Another new face, Kurt Leimer (Team Parker Racing), also began to grow in confidence, improving to P9. On lap 10, Bartholomew got his nose ahead of Humphris into Allard to secure another place by the time the pair reached Campbell. At the front of the race Rice remained glued to the rear wing of Humphris for P5 overall and the Am lead. As they approached the Club chicane on the final lap, Rice edged ahead but then spun allowing Humphris to regain the place, Rice managed to rejoin the race and cross the line before Rookie Leimer approached. Edgerton's win was the second of his Porsche racing career. For recording the fastest lap in each of their respective categories, Hawkey – Pro, and Rice – Am each received one additional championship point. The starting grid for race two would be determined by the finishing positions in race one, that made the front row for Sunday's second race Edgerton from Hawkey.

Race two
The weekend's second race took place on Sunday afternoon with live coverage on free-to-air television via ITV Motorsport. Dry conditions greeted the grid but the threat of rain was in the air meaning everyone was looking to the sky. Edgerton and Hawkey got away well at the start, Clark maintained his spot in third with Bartholomew not far behind in fourth – Edgerton immediately began building a gap out front.

In Am, Humphris maintained his category advantage with Rice and newcomer Alex Malykhin (IN2 Racing) in third. Further back Chambers engaged in a battle with Leimer for P11 overall, but all eyes were soon on the fight for fourth between Bartholomew and Clark up ahead. As Hawkey slipped back towards his rivals the fight for second between Hawkey, Clark and Bartholomew intensified. Bartholomew mounted a run on Clark at Goodwood and was successfully ahead before Church to take third. As spots of rain began to fall on the circuit Bartholomew gained confidence and began closing on Hawkey in second.

The fight for the Am podium saw Malykhin, Cavers, Chambers, and Perfetti in close combat. Cavers soon left the circuit following his fight with Malykhin, he would rejoin and continue. Clark became the first retirement of the race. On lap 9 Bartholomew passed Hawkey for second in slightly slippery conditions, and a last lap change of order in Am saw Humphris and Rice joined on the category podium by Perfetti.

For recording the fastest lap in each of their respective categories, Edgerton – Pro, and Humphris – Am each received one additional championship point. Edgerton's second victory of the weekend means he now takes a 7 point championship lead to the next round at Brands Hatch in two weeks.
