Harry King secures second win with dominant Hungarian display

Rising star Harry King rebounded in fine style after a rough run of form to secure a dominant second win of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season at the Hungaroring.

Challenging weekends at both the Red Bull Ring and on home soil at Silverstone meant the BRDC Superstar went into the fourth round of the campaign playing catch-up in the championship standings, with Harry competing at the Hungarian venue for the first time.

With confidence high following a productive test at the circuit earlier in the year, the BWT Lechner Racing driver kicked off the weekend with a solid run in free practice, where he lapped quicker than his main championship rivals in seventh spot.

Come qualifying, a lap of 1:45.933 - nearly a second faster than he had managed in practice - saw Harry storm to his maiden Supercup pole position, breaking the qualifying lap record in the process.

With overtaking at the Hungaroring being notoriously difficult, the opening seconds of the race would be particularly important and Harry nailed the start when the lights went out to maintain the lead ahead of Dorian Boccolacci.

As the pack behind squabbled over second place, Harry was able to build a slender lead over the opening lap before the safety car was deployed to retrieve two cars following a clash further down the order.

On the restart, Harry once again held onto the lead ahead of Boccolacci and within a lap, had built an advantage of more than a second at the front.

A number of searing laps - including a new record fastest lap that was half a second quicker than anyone else - saw Harry drive away from the rest of the field over the following laps. with his advantage growing to more than three seconds before another safety car allowed his rivals to close in.

With time running out to get the final laps in, the race resumed for what would be a one-lap sprint to the finish but Harry’s position at the front was never at risk as he secured his second win in four Supercup starts this season.

As a result, the young Briton has moved to within seven points of the championship lead ahead of next weekend’s event at Spa; a circuit where Harry has already tasted victory this season in Carrera Cup Deutschland.

"Starting from pole position for the first time was just what I needed after the disappointment of Silverstone, and the pace we displayed as a team in qualifying showed we had found the ideal set-up for the car," he said.

"I was able to make the most of that in the race and could control things from the front, even with the two safety car periods that backed the pack up behind. To convert pole into a second win of the season is fantastic, and setting a new lap record was the icing on the cake.

"The whole team has done a fantastic job this weekend and it’s a result of all the hard work that we put in during our test here earlier in the year. Hopefully, we can repeat this performance next weekend at Spa."
