Indy 500 winner Marcus Ericsson guest driver in the Swedish Championship final!
This year's winner of the world's largest single sporting event, the Indy 500, will start as a guest driver during the final race weekend of the season with Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. Marcus Ericsson challenges the top tier of the starting line-up and competes for the first time against his younger brother Hampus Ericsson.
Racing star Marcus Ericsson announces that he will start as a guest driver during the last race weekend of the year in Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia, as well as the final of the Swedish Championship for GT cars. The jump-in takes place at Mantorp Park on October 1st and will be a unique chance for the Indycar driver to meet racing fans on home soil.
"2022 has been the most successful year of my racing career," says Marcus Ericsson. It is great fun to be able to end this incredible season, with, among other things, the victory in the Indy 500, in front of a Swedish audience at home and as a guest driver in the Swedish Championship final. A great opportunity for me to thank all the fans for their incredible support that I have received.
Earlier this year, Marcus Ericsson entered the history books when he crossed the finish line at Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the winner of the oval classic Indy 500. The race is one of motorsport's three most prestigious races, along with the Monaco Grand Prix and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and is the world's largest single sporting event. Ericsson's feat unfolded in front of 325,000 cheering spectators in the stands.
The guest appearance also gets an extra spice given that Marcus Ericsson is competing against his little brother for the first time. Hampus Ericsson belongs to the top tier of Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia and is one of the title combatants during the Sm-final weekend.
"Of course, I hope to keep up with speed, especially as I get the chance to drive against my little brother Hampus," Ericsson continues. I follow the championship and know that the level of the starting field is high class so it will be tough. This is my first race in a GT car and there's a lot to learn. The car has less downforce than an Indycar, it is heavier and has a tail engine. It's guaranteed to be exciting.
The entry into the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia will be Marcus Ericsson's first race on Swedish soil since he drove karting at a young age. The Indy 500 winner's extensive international career in formula cars began as a 16-year-old.
Marcus Ericsson is part of the Porsche Experience Racing team and starts in a guest car from Porsche Sweden. All drivers drive the identical Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and thus offer the class very tight racing.
"To have the reigning champion from the Indy 500 in the starting line-up during the season finale of Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia is of course completely unique," says Raine Wermelin, Director, Porsche Sweden. This will be a fantastic chance for everyone who loves racing to see Marcus Ericsson in the shape of his life compete during the Swedish Championship final. That Marcus chooses to drive with us is honorable and we send a big thank you to Chip Ganassi Racing who makes this exotic guest appearance possible.
Marcus Ericsson started his Indycar career in 2019 and has been driving since 2020 with the legendary champion team Chip Ganassi Racing. Since then, he has taken three victories, including the title in this year's Indy 500. Marcus Ericsson comes to the Swedish Championship final directly from the season finale of the Indycar Championship at Laguna Seca in California. At present, only two races remain and Marcus Ericsson is ahead of the exciting finish in fourth place, only 17 points from the top with 108 points left to overtake.
