MRS-GT name Johansson and Kingsley for Sebring first round
After weeks of preparation, the first deployment of the MRS team at the Porsche Carrera- Cup North America is on the agenda next weekend. With a promising driver pairing, the team expects correspondingly great chances. The 24-year-old Swede, Erik Johansson, who started last year for the MRS team alongside Jens Klingmann in the ADAC GT Masters joins the team in the USA for his first expense in a Porsche cup car. Last year's champion of the Porsche Cup Challenge, Jeff Kingsley, will join Johansson in the sister MRS-GT car. The two races for the Porsche Carrera Cup will take place as part of the 12 Hours of Sebring, on Thursday 18 March 5:30pm ET and on Friday 19th March, 10:10am ET.
“I’m very happy to be racing for a reputable team like MRS. I got a call from them only three days before practice starts so I am happy to be getting into a car! They have years of experience in Carrera Cup and Super Cup so they will be a great asset. I hope that my championship winning season in the USA will bring them help in their debut season in the USA. I am without time in the new 992 compared to the competition but I know we can work through things quickly. I am very thankful to MRS Racing and Porsche for giving me this opportunity this weekend” - Jeff Kingsley, MRS-GT
“It’s great to tackle the Porsche Carrera Cup North America season with MRS. It’s a team I know very well after my season driving the BMW M6 GT3 in the ADAC GT Masters last year. It’s going to be a big challenge with many firsts but I’m really looking forward to it. There is some fantastic circuits and I think the new Porsche 911 GT3 cup is going to be a brilliant car to drive. Can’t wait to add this to the experience bank.
Special thanks also to BMW Motorsport for allowing me to take on this new experience.” Erik Johansson, MRS-GT
On the occasion of their debut in the USA, the MRS team has come up with a very special vehicle design for one of the brand-new Porsches 992 GT3 Cup which will be showcased on Thursday. The vehicle with the starting number 14 (Erik Johansson) is covered with a US flag in honor of the American fans.
"With this design, we want to make a mark and finally thank you for the friendly welcome here in the USA. In addition, this vehicle is intended to document our milestone forever and to commemorate our debut. We have worked very hard on our plan over the last few weeks and in the end, we actually managed to set up our team in the same way as we know it from Europe. Now we focus on achieving as many successes as possible and we feel confident to do so with our driver pairing. We lack a bit of testing time, but we are confident to make up for it in the free testing sessions. COVID travel restrictions has provided a few hurdles but the crew has arrived here just in time. At this point, we would like to express our special thanks to IMSA and Porsche Motorsport North America, all of whom have done everything possible to support us in our project in the best possible way. We do not want to forget our friends from EURO-GT Miami, who also worked very hard. Of course, the MRS Crew in Germany was a great support, Iris Dorr has kept our backs here in the USA with great commitment! We are very proud of what we have achieved and now we finally we go racing" Karsten Molitor, MRS-GT
