Pereira takes stunning double in Singapore

Dylan Pereira took two excellent wins in Rounds 12 and 13 as Porsche Carrera Cup Asia visited Singapore in the penultimate event of the 2024 season. The Team Shanghai Yonda BWT driver was comfortable throughout both races to bring himself into an outside chance of the title ahead of the season finale in Shanghai.

Pereira started Race 1 on pole position after a grid penalty dropped Mathys Jaubert from first to fourth, but as the lights went out, eyes were on championship leader Alessandro Ghiretti. The Team Jebsen driver made a slow start and dropped all the way down to 10th. As Pereira extended his advantage, a battle for second was taking place, with TORO Racing’s Jaubert hunting Martin Ragginger’s Porsche Holding car.

After several laps right behind his rival, the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Talent Pool by Michelin driver finally broke through to take second, although he was too far back to challenge the dominant Pereira. Meanwhile, Ghiretti was working his way up the field, making several strong overtakes on the Marina Bay Circuit to claim fourth.

In the Pro-Am category, victory for Bao Jinlong put the Phantom Global Racing driver within touching distance of his fifth Pro-Am title. Li Chao took his sixth podium of the season for Team Betterlife, while TORO Racing’s Eric Zang was third.

The title battle in the Am category has been a season-long fight between Eric Kwong and Munkong Sathienthirakul, and it was Kwong who got the upper hand in the first race of the weekend, winning for Bergwerk Motorsport. Sathienthirakul was battling with Triple ACE Racing’s Henry Kwong for second in class, but a spin for the EBM driver dropped him down to fourth, with R&B Racing’s Lu Zhiwei clinching third.

In the second race, Jaubert was starting on pole, but Pereira got the better getaway, once again leading into Turn 1. Behind them, a first corner incident brought out the Safety Car, with three drivers eliminated immediately.

At the restart, Ghiretti quickly moved past Ragginger and up into third. The 2024 Porsche Junior made another place by passing closest title rival Jaubert for second, but he was unable to stop Pereira clinching a fourth race win of the season.

An incredible tenth class victory of the season saw Bao clinch the Pro-Am title, ahead of Li Xuanyu, who performed strongly for Z.SPEED Motorsport. Chao completed the top-three for his second podium finish of the weekend.

After a difficult Round 12, Sathienthirakul bounced back with an excellent showing today, taking 10th overall and Am win. Eric Kwong limited the damage to his championship lead by taking second, while Zhu Zhiyao, the series’ only female driver, took her first podium of the season in third for R&B Racing.

Dylan Pereira, Shanghai Yonda Team BWT: “I’m absolutely delighted to win the two rounds here in Singapore in tough conditions at a very tricky circuit. Once I got into the lead of both races, my goal was to make no mistakes, and I knew if I did that then I would stand a good chance to win. It’s been a great effort along with the team since Free Practice because we weren’t on the pace, but managed to turn it around for qualifying. Going into the last round, the championship battle is interesting and maybe I’m a bit too far back, but it’s racing and anything can happen.”

Bao Jinlong, Phantom Global Racing: “It’s an amazing feeling to win the Pro-Am title for the fifth time in Porsche Carrera Cup Asia. It’s great to take double victory to help secure the championship. I’ve been really pleased with my progress this year when it comes to overtaking cars because when qualifying hasn’t gone well we’ve always managed to come through to win races. Even though, the title is won the goal is still to end the 2024 campaign as strong as possible next time out in Shanghai.”

Eric Kwong, Bergwerk Motorsport: “It feels brilliant to stand on the podium twice and score big points, which is what was needed in such a tight battle with Munkong. It’s great to race at such an iconic circuit alongside the Singapore Grand Prix. The championship fight has been great and there is still lots of points up for grabs, so we need to make sure we’re ready for a massive round in China.”

Alexandre Imperatori, Porsche Carrera Cup Manager: “I’m thrilled that it’s been such a successful event once again alongside the Singapore Grand Prix, it’s always one of the highlights of our season. We kicked off the weekend by announcing our 2025 calendar, and it’s exciting to see the championship set to visit two new tracks. It was also a pleasure to collaborate alongside Porsche Asia Pacific and to host our Welcome Dinner at the Porsche Studio in Singapore, so a big thanks for all their support.

“On the track, we saw brilliant racing throughout the two races, and I want to congratulate Bao Jinlong on an amazing fifth Pro-Am title! The other two championships are so tightly contested, and we can’t wait to see how they play out in the finale at Shanghai, which will also feature the second Endurance Cup event.”
