Porsche Carrera Cup Italia, announces 2023 calendar and new format

The Italian Porsche one-make series have confirmed this years six rounds of its 17th season on the track and a brand new weekend format. Among the changes, longer races and the elimination of the reversal of positions on the starting grid of race 2: so qualifying will also decide pole position and grid of the Sunday race, which assumes the same importance and assigns the same score as race 1.

In its 17th season, which in 2023 falls on Porsche's 75th anniversary, the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia has defined the calendar and, after careful reflection shared with the teams participating in the single-brand, has launched a series of innovations with the aim of make it even more attractive to an already functional format that has recorded great success in recent years in terms of teams and drivers at the start of the series.

The nodal point of the changes made to the sporting regulations is related to the general format of the weekends on the track, starting with that of race 2, which from this year will be equated to race 1 with assignment of the same score and elimination of the starting grid that followed the order of arrival of race 1 (with the artifice of the inversion of the first six classified). In 2023, therefore, the format of qualifying changes, which now includes a single 40-minute session: the best time achieved by each driver/car determines the starting grid of race 1, while the second best time achieved determines the grid of race 2.

Another novelty is the extension of two minutes of the distance of each race: the duration of both, therefore, increases from 28 minutes to 30 minutes + 1 lap. Only the most advanced model of the 911 GT3 Cup, marked "992", will be admitted, and will be used until the 2026 season inclusive. The consequence is the elimination of the Silver Cup, which until last year allowed the adoption of previous generations. The competition will therefore concern the race for the overall title and that of the Michelin Cup (confirmed for drivers over 30 classified FIA "bronze", non-professionals).

The new format

The 2023 calendar includes 6 appointments with each of two races of 30' + 1 lap. In general, the stages of the Italian one-make series opens on the Friday with a 60-minute free practice session. On Saturday morning, qualifying practice (40 minutes) will be held with the novelty of the assignment of both pole positions.

In each race the points will be issued to the first 15 classified overall according to the scheme 25 points to the winner and then 20-17-14-12-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. The pole position of race 1 and race 2 will be award an additional 2 points, while 1 point will go to the driver who set the fastest lap in each of the two races. In the Michelin Cup points will be awarded to the top ten: 15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

For the final classification of both the championship and the Michelin Cup, the best 11 results obtained in the total of the 12 races will be considered valid.

Among the confirmations there are the collective test that will officially open the season on Friday 14 April at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza and the two 4-hour pre-race tests scheduled for the Thursday before the first two 2023 rounds at Misano (6-7 May) and Vallelunga (10-11 June). The season will end in Imola at the end of October after having also touched the circuits of Mugello in July, Monza in September and again the Misano World Circuit, on 7-8 October as part of the highly anticipated Porsche Festival 2023.
