Proton Competition take second in Monza
After the first three races of the 2020 European Le Mans Series the number 77 Proton Competition Porsche and the number 74 Kessel Racing Ferrari were level on points at the top of the championship. The 4 Hours of Monza saw the two contenders go head to head with the number 74 Ferrari of Michael Broniszewski, Nicola Cadei and David Perel come out on top ahead of their rivals. Claudio Schiavoni took the start in the number 60 Iron Lynx Ferrari, the Italian at the head of the LMGTE field after Andrea Piccini had claimed the Italian team’s first ELMS pole position in qualifying.
At the start Schiavoni held his position, with Michael Fassbender in the number 93 Proton Competition Porsche in 2nd place, Christian Ried in the number 77 Porsche in third and Duncan Cameron in the number 55 Spirit of Race Ferrari in fourth.
However, the race was neutralised before the end of the opening lap as the safety car was deployed to recover the number 26 G-Drive Racing Aurus from the first corner incident involving the no39 Graff Oreca.
At the restart Schiavoni and Fassbender slipped down the order as Ried and Cameron made progress up to the front of the field. Ried made a mistake at T4, taking to the escape road, allowing Cameron to take the lead. The British driver opened up a small gap as the number 74 Kessel Racing Ferrari of Michael Broniszewski, which had started at the back of the grid, was up to third and challenging the number 77 Porsche for second place.
At the end of the first 60 minutes of racing a Full Course Yellow period was declared when the number 60 Iron Lynx Ferrari of Sergio Pianezzola was hit by the number 3 United Autosports Ligier of Jim McGuire at Ascari, spinning the 488 around and colliding heavily with the LMP3 car. The Ferrari was heavily damaged, and the race was neutralised to recover it to a safe place. Pianezzola was OK but the car had to be retired. McGuire was handed a 10 second stop and go penalty for causing the accident.
At the restart the number 55 Ferrari was still leading with the number 74 Ferrari and number 77 Porsche in 2nd and third respectively. The number 77 Porsche, now with Alessio Picariello at the wheel, took second from Nicola Cadei in the number 74 Ferrari and then passed Cameron for the LMGTE lead a lap later. Rahel Frey in the number 83 Iron Lynx Ferrari was also catching the leaders, the Swiss driver getting ahead of the number 55 Spirit of Race Ferrari to move into a podium position.
David Perel took over the number 74 Kessel Racing Ferrari and opened up a 30 second gap to the number 77 Porsche of Michele Beretta, with Michelle Gatting in the number 83 Ferrari opening up a 23 second gap to Aaron Scott in the number 55 Ferrari.Matt Griffin took over the Spirit of Race Ferrari from Scott and started to close the gap but couldn’t close enough to Gatting to challenge the Dane before the end of the race.
At the chequered flag the number 74 Kessel Racing Ferrari claimed the victory one lap ahead of the number 77 Proton Competition Porsche, with the number 83 Iron Lynx Ferrari claiming their third podium finish from four races.
