Record number of 34 cars entered in Carrera Cup Italia
With a record number of 34 cars entered, representing 15 teams and 16 Porsche Centers, the Carrera Cup Italia experienced an intense weekend with two races ending in a sprint at the Mugello Circuit, confirming that the fight for the title is very well balanced. The second round of 2021 featured a thrilling duel at the top of the ranking between Alberto Cerqui and Gianmarco Quaresmini on Saturday, both in the qualifying session and in Race 1. Cerqui set the new record of the Tuscan track with a lap time of 1'34"436 in Q1 at the wheel of the 911 GT3 Cup car belonging to the Q8 Hi Perform Team.
However, the Tsunami RT driver overtook him in Q2 and took the pole position with a time of 1'49"492. During the race, the fight continued until the last corner, when Cerqui found a space and managed to overtake Quaresmini on the Bucine turn, beating him right on the finish line. For the driver from Brescia, 2013 vice-champion, it was the second photo-finish victory of the season after the one scored in Misano, again in Race 1. The two expert drivers were joined on the podium by Alessandro Giardelli, the increasingly surprising 18-year-old driver from Lombardy and a member of Porsche Italia's Scholarship Programme.
The Dinamic Motorsport driver also got second place in Race 2, won by Marzio Moretti. The driver from Mantua, born in 2002, is one of the under-23 participants in the coaching program reserved for young drivers. He won right after starting from the pole position, resisting the attacks coming from Aldo Festante (Ombra Racing) - who then spun off - and then, from mid-race, to those from Giardelli. It is the first personal victory in the Carrera Cup Italia for Moretti, which confirms the successful comeback of the Bonaldi Motorsport team after two years. Giardelli, on the other hand, scored his third consecutive podium in his first season in the Italian one-make series and is now in pursuit of Quaresmini (3rd in Race 2) and the leading driver Cerqui (4th).
In the Michelin Cup competitions, Alex De Giacomi (Tsunami RT), Marco Cassarà (Raptor Engineering), and Piero Randazzo (AB Racing) climbed on the podium in Race 1 after a long series of spectacular duels. The same order of arrival applies for Race 2. De Giacomi is trying to outdistance the other drivers for the first time this season with these two consecutive wins. In the Silver Cup, returning Pablo Biolghini (Tsunami RT) won Race 1 and Massimiliano Montagnese Race 2. Thanks to his second success of the season, Montagnese is now leading the championship alone with the 911 GT3 Cup model 991 gen.I of Team Malucelli.
Only Simone Iaquinta was absent from the second seasonal round on the Tuscan circuit due to a concurrent commitment in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup in Austria. However, the reigning champion will be back in action in the third 2021 round scheduled in Imola on 23-25 July.
