YE and Kang take first wins in season opener at Shanghai

After successful first day of practice at the Shanghai International Circuit the long awaited start to the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season finaly came alive this weekend with the roar of engines from the new 2020 992 gen one generation Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Car at the Shanghai circuit.

Pole postion went to Daniel LU Wenlong and Team Jebsen after saturadys morning qualifying seasonis complete who delivered a stellar performance to claim pole position with a time of 2:06.656. Starting next on the first row was Andre COUTO with TORO Racing with a qualifying time of 2:06.825 followed by YU Kuai and Team StarChase just off by two-hundredths of a second putting in a time of 2:06.845. Leading the Pro-Am pack was ZHOU Bihuang with Meidong Racing with a time of 2:07.889, and Eric KWONG delivering consistent performance all weekend toped the Am grid with2:09.674.

There was no shortage of exitement in the first race of Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2021 Local racing driver André Couto finished in14th place, the Macau driver was leading the first race on Saturday after he got the better of Daniel LU Wenlong at the start until the second to last lap, when he was hit from behind putting him way down the order. It was a much-anticipated return for Couto after a seventeen-month hiatus due to the pandemic restrictions. The local driver started off well by securing the second fastest time in the first race qualifier and the fifth place in the second race starting grid but after the impact Couto was unable to make up any postions eventuly crosing the line in 14th place. This allowed LING Kang of Meidong Racing taking the provisional top spot as the first winner of the year CUI Yue from Porsche Holding put in a strong performance to take the runner-up spot with the final podium going to Leo YE.

The action continued through the field, with ZHOU Bihuang taking the Pro-Am win in another strong performance from Meidong Racing, and Eric KWONG taking the win for the Am category

and thrown away from the top positions, an accident that also had an impact on the Sunday race.

Temperatures were high on track for Round 2 on Sunday and the competition was just as hot André Couto accident on Saturady also had an impact on the Sunday race. During the second race, held on Sunday, the local driver had to cope with the problems resulting from the accident that occurred on the previous day as Couto struggled with oversteering especially in the breaking areas resulting in the local driver finishing seventh.

But it was Leo YE BD Group who put in stella performance to take the Overall win, starting from 4th on the grid Leo stormed through the field carving his way through the field while controlling the pace perfectly from the front to get the win. Starting from pole, YU Kuai was also on pace and claimed the second spot with Daniel LU Wenlong taking the final spot on the podium after a heroic defense through the second half of the race against CUI Yue.

Pressure was also high in the Pro-Am category, with BAO Jinlong of Team Shanghai Yonda who started second was soon up to race speed and it was not long before he took the lead, despite pressure from behined from Min Heng but it was Jinlong who held on to take the win with MIN Heng taking seconed with LI Chao taking third. Congratulations went to Henry KWONG for the Am class win, putting in a strong performance to pull out a well-earned victory over Jacky WU and Eric KWONG.
