Battles in Various Conditions
Round five and six of the Porsche Sprint Challenge Japan, took place in Okayama International Circuit on 13 June, 2021. There were ten participants in total, six in GT3-Ⅰclass, one in Open class, and three in GT4 class.
The qualifying session started from 8 :25 for 20 minutes. The track was in full-wet condition and the rain got hard as the session began. Since it was not sure if the weather would become better or worse, everybody got onto the track to do at least one attack to secure good grid.
At the beginning, it was Sawa, Porsche Japan Junior driver in GT4 class, who recorded the best time in overall. When the session had only 10 minutes left and the rain had almost stopped, the track condition got better than at the beginning. Then drivers with GT3 Cup started their attack lap. The pole sitter in the GT3-Ⅰclass was OGINO. Nagashima would start rd. five next to OGINI. Mano was on third grid. Sawa recorded fourth best time overall, which meant he was faster than three 991 GT3 cup even with his 718 Cayman GT4 CS. Because of the regulation, he had to start from eight gird, after all GT Cups for the final but still his performance was impressive.
The signal for round five of PSCJ turned into all green at 10:53. There was no rain but the track was still in partialy wet condition. There was only one car who wore rain tires but he also changed them to slicks at starting grid. Even the race control said it was wet condition, so all participants choose slick tires.
It was Nagashima, who took the lead at the start even though he was on second grid. Pole sitter OGINO spun the wheels and lost the position. Hagiwara also overtook OGINO once from third grid but spun out at second corner so he became tail ender of GT3 class. At the first lap, Nagashima’s pace was much faster than OGINO’s but OGINO was closing the gap each lap. Since it was only the record line which was dry, OGINO could not challenge the leader for a few laps. At the seventh lap, OGINO took inside of Nagashima at Piper corner and became the leader. The gap between the two got wider in two laps. But Nagashima still had not given up the race. At the final lap of the 10 laps race, he brought the battle to tail-to nose at Atwood corner, then took the position back at Piper corner where he was overtaken a few laps before. Nagashima won the race with 0.4 seconds ahead of OGINO. Hagiwara finished the race at third place, coming back from spinning out during the opening lap.
The rain stopped around noon and the track was completely dry which was first time in this weekend. Round six got started at 14:38 underneath the cloudy sky. Pole sitter as was MUSASHI. He recorded the fastest lap in rd. five although he finished the race at sixth. Hagiwara started from second grid. OGINO was at third grid and the winner of the previous race, Nagashima sat on fourth grid. In GT4 class, it was Sawa again at pole position and two 718 Cayman GT4 CS lined up after him.
MUSASHI secured top position at rolling start. Okayama was known as tough track for overtaking because of its layout and it was home track for MUSASHI. OGINO passed Hagiwara and gave a pressure to MUSASHI but MUSASHI knows well about the track and gave no chance to OGINO. Behind them, battels for fourth was also tight. The gap between four cars are in one second for each from until the end of the race.
