Harry king maintains 100% podium record with Austrian recovery drive

Harry King made it three podium finishes from three in the 2024 Mobil 1  Porsche Supercup with a fine recovery drive to second at the Red Bull Ring, maintaining his championship challenge heading into his home event at Silverstone next weekend.

Harry headed to Austria for the home event for his BWT Lechner Racing team having finished as runner up in the opening two races of the season at Imola and on the streets of Monaco.

A productive start to the weekend saw Harry leading the way in free practice, edging out Alessandro Ghiretti by 0.050s to top the times with current points leader Larry ten Voorde back in fourth.

Come qualifying, Harry would have to settle for a place on the second row of the grid, setting a near identical time to the one he had posted in practice to line up in P4 for the start of the race.

Making a move for third place at the start, Harry managed to clear Keegan Masters to take the position going into turn three and then tried to make a move around the outside of Marvin Klein going into turn four.

When Klein then ran wide, Harry managed to get up the inside of his rival before being tipped into a half spin that cost him momentum, and was then run off track through the final corners to end lap one back in sixth spot.

Clearly quicker than the cars ahead, King wasted little time in moving ahead of Klein on the second lap to take fifth place and then got a run on team-mate Theo Overhaus going up to turn three on the following lap to move into fourth.

Harry’s astonishing recovery drive continued apace as Lirim Zendeli was quickly despatched to move the Briton into the podium positions, although Masters was almost three seconds up the road in second spot.

Immediately setting a new fastest lap, Harry quickly started to reel the South African in and by the half way point of the race, had brought the gap between the pair to below a second.

King was soon locked onto the rear of his rival and heading up to turn three on lap eleven, switched from the outside line to the inside and duly took the place as Masters locked a wheel and ran wide.

The only downside for Harry was that the time lost whilst fighting his way back through the pack had allowed ten Voorde to break clear at the front, although a third successive second place finish - having kept Klein at bay - still marked a fine result for the Briton given his opening lap dramas.

From Austria, Harry now returns to home soil for the British round at Silverstone sitting second to ten Voorde in the championship standings.

"As ever, the team gave me a great car this weekend and I was able to make the most of it at the start to gain places before the contact mid-way round the first lap that undid all my good work," he said.

"The way I was able to charge back through the field showed we had the pace, and I certainly think that we could have come away from the weekend with our first win of the season and closed the gap to Larry at the top had it not been for the contact.

"As it is, I'll go to Silverstone this weekend feeling more determined than ever to fight for my first home win in the Supercup, and will give my all to get onto the top step of the podium."
