Theo Oeverhaus: star of the second Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East weekend at Bahrain
The second weekend of the Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East was the weekend of Theo Oeverhaus. Two pole positions, two victories - it could not have been better for the young German at Bahrain International Circuit, which hosted the series for the second time in a row.
Two test sessions of two hours each on Thursday gave all the drivers a perfect opportunity to fine-tune their skills again before the official start of the race weekend. On Friday, in free practice, there was then another opportunity to prepare for the first decisive qualifying session, and Oeverhaus had already set the tone for what was about to come with claiming P1 there. Just to follow in due course when he claimed pole position for the first race. The German led his fellow countryman, 16-year-old Janne Stiak, by three tenths of a second, with Colin Boenighausen in P3. The fastest in the ProAM class was Ahmad Al-Shehab from Kuwait, also topping the GCC category. Sebastian Gorga from Italy led the AM class drivers.
Oeverhaus then continued to display his excellent form by winning Friday´s race. The championship leader had a hard fight with Stiak during lap 1, when the lead changed a few times, but then was able to pull away to cross the finish line 4.5 seconds ahead. Flynt Schuring from the Netherlands came home in P3. In the ProAM class, Ahmad Al-Shehab was on top, with the Kuwaiti also winning the GCC category. Sebastian Gorga from Italy claimed victory in the AM class, making it clear he had recovered well from a crash on test day.
Oeverhaus again was fastest in qualifying for the second race on Saturday, on Bahrain National Day. The still-18-year-old had an advantage of more than six tenths over Janne Stiak and Flynt Schuring in P3. Fastest in the ProAM class was another German, Soeren Spreng, while Khaled Alahmadi from Saudi Arabia topped the GCC category. Leo Willert from Austria led the AM class drivers, with the fastest lap the talented drummer ever did at BIC in quite a few years of participation.
Oeverhaus, who in 2022 was the youngest guest starter ever in the prestigious German DTM, finally crowned his perfect weekend with victory number two in race 2, extending his championship lead even further. He crossed the finish line more than 8 seconds ahead of Janne Stiak, who had lost his second place to Schuring at the start, but managed to get it back with just one lap to go. In the ProAM class, Soeren Spreng was first on the line but received a 5-second penalty for a false start, so Ahmad Al-Shehab from Kuwait, who also won the GCC category, finally repeated his win from race one, as did Sebastian Gorga from Italy in the AM class.
Series Head and Promoter Robert Lechner wanted to:
“Thank everybody, BIC, the Kingdom of Bahrain, where we always feel very welcome, Porsche, our whole crew, organizers, engineers, mechanics, teams, and drivers. It was another great weekend with a lot of close and hard racing and a good show for everybody. Now we will enjoy the holiday break, but we are already looking forward to being back to racing in Dubai at the end of January 2024. So moving everything from A to B - or in this case, from B to D - will be the next challenge!”
