Larry ten Voorde was crowned champion in the international Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup a few days ago in Monza, Italy. At the sixth round of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland at the Sachsenring, the 27-year-old Dutchman has the chance to take the next step towards claiming his fourth title in the German one-make cup. The Proton Huber Competition team driver will travel to races 11 and 12 next weekend (6 to 8 September 2024) as championship leader. His advantage over Britain’s Harry King stands at 24 points. The new vice-champion of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup contests the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland for Allied Racing.

Both title contenders know the special quirk of the Sachsenring all too well: the disproportionately high number of left-hand corners. This puts a particularly heavy load on the front right tyre of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. “You have to avoid the front of your car from sliding too wide in those corners,” says Larry ten Voorde, who is all too familiar with the battle against understeer. “We can counteract this a little with the suspension set-up and adjustment of the rear wing. But the driver has the biggest influence on this.” In 2023, ten Voorde finished the doubleheader event at the Sachsenring in second and third. Moreover, he celebrated victory there every year from 2019 to 2021.

“The Sachsenring doesn’t really suit my driving style,” admits Harry King. Last season, the UK racer was unable to finish higher than ninth and 13th on his debut at the circuit near Chemnitz. “We’re testing on the track the week before the race – I want to be perfectly prepared.”

Robert de Haan from Team75 Bernhard ranks third in the overall standings. As the best-placed driver from the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland Talent Pool, the 18-year-old Dutchman also leads the Rookie classification. His fellow countrymen Kas Haverkort, who drives for Uniserver by Team GP Elite, and Flynt Schuring are his hottest rivals in this category.

Schuring, who turned 18 just a few weeks ago, will line up for Proton Huber Competition. His brother Morris set a new record as the youngest race winner in the history of the Carrera Cup Deutschland at the Sachsenring in the 2023 season. Flynt Schuring – like Germany’s Janne Stiak, who is even a year younger – has the chance to break his brother’s record next weekend.

In the team standings, Proton Huber Competition has already pulled away slightly from the chasing pack. In addition to Larry ten Voorde, the two Germans Alexander Tauscher and Sebastian Freymuth are driving for the Bavarian team. Tauscher recently celebrated his maiden victory in the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland at the Nürburgring.

Talent Pool meets Talent Pool
The Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland Talent Pool welcomes special guests to the sixth round at the Sachsenring: their colleagues from the newly-created Talent Pool of the Porsche Sports Cup Deutschland, who are also supported by Porsche Deutschland.

The Talent Pool has been a part of the German Carrera Cup since 2018, with the current seven selected youngsters receiving comprehensive support in the areas of fitness, nutrition, and media as well as professional coaching from former Porsche works driver Wolf Henzler. At the start of the current season, Porsche Deutschland extended the Talent Pool support to the Porsche Sports Cup Deutschland. This series is the entry-level category in the one-make cup world of the Stuttgart-based sports car brand. Six young drivers, including the Bulgarian Alexandra Vateva, receive support comparable to that in the Carrera Cup.

“The concept of the Talent Pool has proved to be extremely successful. A big number of professionals from the Porsche Motorsport squad and other brands’ works teams have taken the first major step of their careers in the Carrera Cup Deutschland Talent Pool. This success has inspired Porsche Deutschland to establish a Talent Pool in the Porsche Sports Cup Deutschland as well. I’m looking forward to welcoming the young drivers to the Sachsenring. The members of our Talent Pool will introduce them to the world of professional motorsport,” says Thorsten Rückert, Project Manager Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland.

Sachsenring
Today’s Sachsenring is based on a road circuit opened in 1927 on the outskirts of Hohenstein-Ernstthal, home town of author Karl May. The track, which was originally just under nine-kilometres long, occasionally hosted rounds of the motorcycle world championship. More stringent safety requirements led to the Sachsenring being rebuilt as a permanent 3.645 kilometres racetrack, which was opened in 1996. As the highlight of the circuit’s season, the MotoGP attracts around 200,000 fans. A distinctive section of the track is the so-called Omega, one of only two right-hand corners on the Sachsenring: here the track winds almost 270 degrees around a stand of trees.
