Will Aspin takes victory and sets sight on continued Carrera Cup success

Will Aspin took a well-earned victory in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at the weekend (August 24/25), as well as adding a third podium finish of the season to his tally.

Showing signs of promise through testing and practice as he worked hard with the Eden Race Drive team, the entire field was thrown a curveball when rain began to fall as they were released for qualifying. As an Am drive then spun into the wall, the red flag was shown, eliminating any chance of a lap on slick tyres. Heading out on a wet but drying track, Will eventually finished up third in Pro-Am.

For the opening 19-lap race on Sunday, Will started well, gaining one place overall but frustratingly had two Pro class drivers between himself and the next car in Pro-Am ahead. He then had to go on the defensive and, as a Pro driver got past, lost momentum and was shuffled back three places, though remained third in class. He regained one place overall in the final few laps, taking a class podium in the process for a good finish.

Starting race two well, the British/Italian racer avoided a spinning car on lap one and quickly made his way past the Pro-Am leader, running eighth overall and comfortably battling with Pro drivers. Despite some pressure from the car behind, he drove well and scored his first win of the season, a fine reward for plenty of hard work.

Will and Eden Race Drive will be looking to carry this form onto Silverstone over the weekend of September 20-22, for two races on the short and exciting National circuit.

“Winning makes me feel a lot better than I did before the weekend and builds a lot of confidence for the final few races. I am looking forward to Silverstone and building on the result, moving forwards, and moving up the grid – that’s what we have to work on.

“Overall, my aim is to get as high up as possible and get an overall podium or even a win. To be able to do that, we have to get qualifying right with everything at 100%. It feels good, we’ll work hard to make sure we’re on form and get the Pro-Am wins which will leave us as high up the order as possible.”
