Alberto Cerqui takes first win of the season
The Porsche Carrera Cup Italia series kicked off its 15th season on 4-6 June at the Misano World Circuit with a record number of registered drivers and two hard-fought races that indicate there might be another photo finish in the fight for the titles. The line-up of the 2021 edition of the Italian one-make series seems to be a very competitive and varied one, with experienced champions, no less than nine young drivers under 23 enrolled in the Scholarship Program, and many "gentleman drivers" ready to compete in the Michelin Cup and Silver Cup categories. Altogether, 31 participants registered for the championship, and 31 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars competed in Misano, representing 14 teams and 14 Porsche Centers from all over Italy.
Thanks to a strong start from the pole position after setting a new record in the qualifying sessions (1'34"392), Alberto Cerqui is now the first winner of the season. On Saturday night, the 29-year-old official driver of the Q8 Hi Perform Team preceded on the podium of Race 1 the reigning champion Simone Iaquinta, who has joined Dinamic Motorsport, and 2018 champion Gianmarco Quaresmini (Tsunami RT) at the end of an exciting race that also saw Marzio Moretti, the 19-year-old driver from Mantova (Bonaldi Motorsport) who crossed the finish line fourth, fight for victory.
Once again, Race 2 was dominated by young drivers as Moretti, and the two rookies Giammarco Levorato (Tsunami RT) and Alessandro Giardelli (Dinamic Motorsport), challenged their more experienced rivals in the lead positions. Thanks to a lightning-fast start, the victory went to Iaquinta, who ended the weekend in first place in the standings, joining Cerqui (4th in Race 2) at 50 points. Second and back on the podium was Quaresmini, while Giardelli, only 18 years old, was the first driver of the Scholarship Program 2021 to get third place.
As for the other categories, the two-time champion Alex De Giacomi (Tsunami RT) immediately scored a double win in Michelin Cup, preceding Marco Cassarà, title winner in 2019 and at his first race for the Raptor Engineering team. Massimiliano Montagnese ( Malucelli Team) and Davide Scannicchio (ZRS Motorsport) shared the successes in Silver Cup, the category reserved for the 911 GT3 Cup model 991 gen. I cars.
The second round of the season is scheduled to take place at the Mugello Circuit over the 4 of July weekend.
