Dylan Pereira wins Porsche Supercup race number 300
The Porsche Supercup has completed exactly 300 races since 1993. The anniversary race of the international one-make cup was one of the most eventful: on the rain-soaked Formula 1 circuit in Spa-Francorchamps, Dylan Pereira won unimpressed by numerous spins and slips by colleagues as well as three safety car phases. The Luxembourger vigorously fended off the constant attacks of his Turkish BWT Lechner Racing team-mate Ayhancan Güven. The German Laurin Heinrich (Nebulus Racing by Huber) completed the podium as the fastest rookie in the field of the 32 Porsche 911 GT3 Cups.
A decisive situation took place just a few meters after the start in the infamous Passage Eau Rouge. “I got off to a good start, so I was able to start an attack on Larry right away,” reported Pereira. On the approach to Eau Rouge, he sat down next to Larry ten Voorde from Team GP Elite, who had started from pole position. Both vehicles touched slightly - and the Dutchman spun. “I was on the line with less grip, which made it easy for me to slip,” Ten Voorde later admitted. While the reigning champions returned to the field in 13th place, Pereira took over the lead.
For safety reasons, the race management had sent the safety car out onto the track after another spin in the field. At the restart, Porsche Junior Ayhancan Güven saw the chance to attack leader Pereira. However, he held against it and defended the top. Then the two nine-eleven from the BWT Lechner Racing team pulled away from the field without Güven being able to launch another promising attack on the team-mate.
Behind them, however, the battles for position continued cheerfully, not always without contact with the enemy. One of the victims was Jaxon Evans (Martinet by Alméras). The second in the table from New Zealand, who started from third on the grid, was turned around by a competitor - past the chance to catch up points on overall leader Larry ten Voorde.
Instead, the main actors in the battle for third place were the Austrian Christopher Zöchling (FACH AUTO TECH), the Germans Laurin Heinrich and Leon Köhler (both Nebulus Racing by Huber) and Max van Splunteren (Team GP Elite) from the Netherlands. The battles for position within this group of four were only briefly interrupted by a second safety car phase triggered by spins. When the race management sent the security vehicle onto the track a third time due to a vehicle stranded in the gravel, Heinrich was in third position behind Pereira and Güven. Because the race was finished behind the safety car, nothing changed in this order. "Started from tenth place, finished third - something like this is only possible in a rain race," said Heinrich happily.
With his first win of the current season, Dylan Pereira improved to third place behind Larry ten Voorde and Jaxon Evans. For this, the Luxembourger, like rookie winner Laurin Heinrich and Monegasse Nicolas Misslin (Lechner Racing Middle East) as the best-placed ProAm received a laurel wreath in addition to the usual trophies - a stylish homage to the history of the Porsche Supercup, which has been going on since 1993.
“The 300th race of the Porsche Supercup was certainly one of the most exciting of all, a worthy anniversary. Despite the cold weather, we saw a lot of hot fights for positions. Congratulations especially to the leaders, who offered great racing in extremely difficult conditions, ”commented Oliver Schwab, Project Manager Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.
The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will start next weekend as part of the Dutch Grand Prix (September 3 to 5, 2021). And in fact, after 28 years of the Supercup, there are still premieres: The one-make cup is making its first appearance in Zandvoort.
