Guatemalan Llarena and his bottom line of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup

The Guatemalan Mateo Llarena takes stock of the 2020 season of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in which he set four records: at 16 years, four months and nine days, in Austria he became the youngest driver to compete in a race in 28 years the history of the most demanding single-brand cup in the world; by occupying the fifteenth place in the third date, disputed in Budapest, he became the youngest pilot in obtaining a point in the cup that is disputed since 1993; By completing the eight dates of the 2020 season, he became the first Latin American rookie to complete a full season of the Supercup, which this year was won by Dutchman Larry ten Voorde, and finally, with 18th place overall. , Llarena is the best Latin American classified in the general classification in the entire history of the championship.

“I learned a lot in each of the eight races that I played. The first two helped me to adapt to the car and the category, and in the remaining six I gave my best to achieve good results ”, said the driver who raced the season with the German team Molitor-Racing-Systems. "As expected, the level of the drivers is quite high, since I knew that it is a very competitive category."

Regarding the different tracks on which he competed, Llarena said that Monza, where the season closed, was the most complicated of all. “It has a lot of fast corners and some quite slow and it's not easy to find the perfect race line, obviously the one I enjoyed the most and the one I adapted to the fastest was Budapest, where I got my first point in the Supercup. It has a layout with a lot of fast corners and also slow sectors ”.

Llarena also got a point on the fifth date, held at Silverstone, and another two on the sixth race held in Barcelona, which helped him to finish in 18th place in the general classification among the 36 drivers who raced in the season (five of them special guests to specific races). This position becomes more relevant when taking into account that he is the best-ranked Latin American rider in the general classification in the 28 Supercup seasons. He surpassed the 27th position of the Mexican Santiago Creel in 2016 and the 21st of the Argentine Dorian Mansilla in 2019.

Although he has not yet signed a contract for next season, Llarena is clear about what he wants. "For 2021 I would like to race the German Porsche Carrera Cup and possibly return to the Supercup in 2022, the important thing is to continue in the GT3 Cup series”.

In the short term, Llarena has things clearer. "My plans for the remainder of this year is to win the national championships that I will be running in the coming months in Guatemala”.

After almost three months of living in Europe only accompanied by the Guatemalan instructor John Paul Hazbun, the young pilot recalled that it was a stage in which he mixed many moments of joy with others of nostalgia. “It was difficult, since it was several months. I miss the country in general, my family, my friends and going to the track in Guatemala, On the other hand, I learned a lot of new things, I met spectacular places and people and the race weekends kept me quite entertained."

This same week Llarena will return to his country and continue with his successful automotive career, as well as his school studies.
