Huber Racing closes Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season with podium finish

Simone Iaquinta finished on the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup podium at his home race in Monza in the Huber Racing Porsche. A challenging season ends for the Bavarian team.

The 2023 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season came to an end in the royal park of Monza. Huber Racing from Hofkirchen in Bavaria fielded three Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars on the high-speed circuit in northern Italy. Local hero Simone Iaquinta, five-time motorbike world champion Jorge Lorenzo and Bashar Mardini drove the cars from the Huber line-up.

In qualifying on Saturday morning, Iaquinta took tenth position on the grid. Lorenzo, who knows the track from the Italian Porsche Carrera Cup, started the race from 19th position - the MotoGP legend's best grid position in the top-class one-make cup.

The race on the circuit just outside Milan developed into a spectacular slipstream battle with several collisions and a lot of drama. Simone Iaquinta was able to push through the collisions in the starting phase unscathed and thus advanced to fifth position. After a safety car restart, Iaquinta was able to make up one position. After another neutralisation, the Italian engaged in a spectacular duel with a competitor for third position. It was not until the last lap that he fixed the podium position after several shifts of places. For the two-time champion of the Italian Carrera Cup, it is the first podium result in the 2023 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season, for Huber Racing it is the second top three result after a challenging season.

Jorge Lorenzo also made it through the chaotic start phase without any mistakes and fought his way up to ninth place. The Spaniard had never been in such a good position in a race of the traditional racing series. But after the second restart, the 36-year-old was involved in a collision and had to park the car in the pit lane with damage.
Bashar Mardini finished the race in 18th place.

"Wow, what a race!" cheered Luca Rettenbacher, who has temporarily taken over the team management together with Gerhard Freundorfer, after the race. "I'm very happy for Simone that he was able to score his first podium in the 2023 season. The fact that he was able to clinch this at his home race in particular makes it even more special. Jorge also showed a fantastic performance in the race and proved that he has been able to make great progress this season. Unfortunately, he had to finish the race after the collision, otherwise he could have surely scored a great result. All in all, a good end to a difficult season in the Supercup for us, which gives us a lot of confidence during this difficult time."

The best-placed Huber Racing driver in the overall Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup standings is Simone Iaquinta in 12th place with 42 points.
