Podiums put Duckhams Yuasa Racing with Redline back in title fight
Duckhams Yuasa Racing with Redline put its Porsche Carrera Cup GB championship aspirations back on track with two podium finishes at Thruxton for Adam Smalley at the weekend (August 27/28).
In qualifying, Porsche GB Junior Driver Adam narrowly missed out on pole position by 0.161s, lining up third on the grid for the opening race, while Oliver White was just 0.851s away from the quickest time but ninth of the Pro class competitors.
As race one got underway the following morning, Adam started well and held third position despite the best efforts of Theo Edgerton, while Oliver remained ninth. Adam then began to chip away at the gap to Gus Burton ahead but found himself a little adrift of the leading duo but clear of Edgerton behind. Meanwhile, Oliver was stuck behind Jake Giddings.
Adam came under pressure from Edgerton in the closing stages, being held up as he lapped Nick Jones, but doggedly held onto his podium position by putting his car in all the right places, but Oliver continued to be frustrated in a big train of cars from sixth to 11th. However, not giving up, he managed to find his way past Giddings on the penultimate lap to gain eighth place overall, while Adam crossed the line third.
Adam started race two well, having to work hard to keep Will Martin behind him but holding his position, while Oliver had a somewhat lonely race in eighth position, fending off Josh Malin behind. Adam wasn’t troubled in second place, scoring good points to get his championship aspirations back on track, now sitting just 12 points off the lead with 52 points still up for grabs.
Duckhams Yuasa Racing with Redline will be back in action in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB over the weekend of September 24/25 for the penultimate meeting of the 2022 season on the short and always action-packed Silverstone National circuit.
Adam Smalley, #21
“It was a great weekend all in all, we finished third in qualifying, which was a good start to the weekend. Third in race one and second in race two means that, from what was a very difficult Friday, it turned out to be a great Saturday and Sunday. A bagful of points brings us closer into the championship fight, which is always nice, and I just want to keep this momentum into Silverstone now and fingers crossed, we can have another strong result there. The last five times I have been to Thruxton I have finished on the podium, so that's a nice little fact! We'll keep chipping away and fingers crossed we will have a good one at Silverstone.”
Oliver White, #2
“Qualifying was a bit difficult to be honest, I wasn't very happy with tenth, I just didn't hook up some very good laps on the new tyres in the last run, which is a shame, but that's my fault. I was struggling at the chicane in Free Practice as well, which wasn't helping. Race one was good, I managed to make a some places up with a couple of good overtakes which I enjoyed, and finished eighth on the road.
“The second race was similar, I was just following the cars around in front for a while and the car behind came into the side of me, but Josh apologised to be fair, so that's all fine. We both lost time but I kept the same position, so it was okay.”
