Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup starts the season with renewable fuels

The new season for the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup begins this weekend as part of the Monaco Grand Prix. The new 911 GT3 Cup, Generation 992, celebrates its competition premiere in the international Porsche Brand Cup on the famous street circuit in the Principality. In its 29th season, the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup has contested eight races as part of the FIA Formula One World Championship.

For the first time, the 4.0-litre suction engines, now around 375 kW (510 hp), are powered by Esso Renewable Racing Fuel, a fuel mix largely made up of renewable, bio-based components. In the course of the 2022 season, the switch to so-called eFuels is planned. These are fuels based on hydrogen produced with renewable electricity. The aim of the partnership between Porsche and ExxonMobil is to gain important experience for possible further developments with regard to use in production vehicles in the future.

"The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup already sets two highlights at the start of the 2021 season. We start for the first time in Monaco. This very special track, which does not forgive any mistakes and cannot be tested on, is a big test for the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. In addition, the new Esso Renewable Racing Fuel from our partner ExxonMobil will be used for the first time. Teams and drivers are motivated to the very tip of their hair. The entire field is extremely close together during the lap times, as was already shown in the test in Monza, Italy. I think we are experiencing the most exciting start to the season in the history of the Supercup," says Oliver Schwab, project manager Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

Larry ten Voorde (Netherlands, Team GP Elite) competes as the reigning Supercup champion in Monaco. His competitors include last year's overall runner-up Dylan Pereira (Luxembourg) and Porsche Junior Ayhancan Güven (Turkey, both BWT Lechner Racing) as well as the defending champions in the Rookie and ProAm standings, Max van Splunteren (Netherlands, Team GP Elite) and Roar Lindland (Norway, Nebulus Racing by Huber). Among the newcomers is 20-year-old Harry King (Great Britain, Parker Revs Racing), the reigning champion of the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain supported by Porsche GB.

Porsche and ExxonMobil are relying on a two-stage strategy for the introduction of renewable fuels in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

In the current season, the racing cars will start with a bio-based fuel mixture. The share of advanced biofuel is derived from food waste products. Additional fuel components are added in order to achieve the required properties in terms of knock resistance and firing behaviour in the final fuel. In the course of 2022, the second step will be the introduction of a synthetically produced fuel (eFuel) from the Haru Oni pilot plant in Chile. With this Esso Renewable Racing Fuel, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 85 percent if it meets the current fuel standard according to the required blending1.

The season opener of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup starts on Sunday, 23 May 2021 at 10:30 CEST. The TV channels Eurosport and Sky Sport as well as the streaming service f1tv.formula1.com broadcast live.
