Porsche Sports Cup China set for season opener as GT World Challenge Asia continues at Fuji Speedway

Porsche Sports Cup China (PSCC) is set for its opening round of the 2022 season this weekend at Ningbo, combining road car activities with racing for drivers of all skill levels.

Debuting in 2019, PSCC travels across China to some of the country’s greatest race tracks, providing an excellent experience for China’s Porsche enthusiasts. This year, the series will take on Ningbo, Tianjin and Zhuhai before the season finale in Shanghai.

PSCC offers a wide range of activities for customers, inviting drivers to try their hand at a number of programmes designed to develop new skills on the track, and to open the door to those who want to move up the motorsport ladder and race at an international level.

The Introduction to Race Track programme allows customers to experience driving on a circuit for the first time, under the guidance of a professional Porsche instructor, familiarising them with the basic and dynamic skills that are required on-track. For the first time in 2022, the all-electric Porsche Taycan will have its own dedicated Introduction to Race Track sessions.

The Porsche Drivers Competition represents a step-up, providing a more challenging experience. This programme offers two 30-minute practice sessions, before drivers go against the clock to test their abilities to the limit. Competitors can take on a single lap time trial, or push themselves with three timed laps on-track.

For the more experienced racer, the Porsche Sprint Challenge China gives drivers the opportunity to go wheel to wheel with each other in a full racing programme. They will embark on two practice sessions ahead of qualifying, before competing in a pair of 30-minute races.

The Porsche Sprint Challenge China entry list for this weekend features the biggest GT4 grid to date, with seven cars, four of those being the new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport. Shanghai-based squad Absolute Racing also return to the grid with Hangcheng Liu at the wheel of the #992 Porsche 911 GT3 R.

2022 sees the debut of the Dealer Trophy, allowing dealer-supported entries to challenge for victory throughout the championship, not just for overall wins but across the season to become the first Dealer Trophy champion.

Open to all Porsche owners, the Porsche Parade offers the chance for drivers to join their fellow enthusiasts on a lap of the circuit, giving an excellent opportunity for some incredible photos and to share their passion for Porsche.

Following last weekend’s round at Suzuka, GT World Challenge Asia travels to Fuji Speedway for back-to-back rounds. After their podium finish in Race 1 at the figure-of-eight circuit, Porsche Center Okazaki pair Hiroaki Nagai and Yuta Kamimura will be looking for more of the same as the series approaches its halfway mark.

Currently sitting fourth in the standings, EBM Giga Racing’s Setiawan Santoso and Reid Harker continue their season in the #8 Porsche 911 GT3 R, while the EBM Giga Racing-supported AAS Motorsport entry of Tanart Sathienthirakul and Kantadhee Kusiri looks to build on their double top-10 finish from last week.

Reigning GT3-Am champions Andrew MacPherson and Ben Porter sit top of the standings after two strong rounds so far in the #51 AMAC Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 R (991), and return to the circuit where they took victory and third place in that title-winning 2019 season. Meanwhile, Bingo Racing make their first appearance of the season with Japanese duo Bankcy and Shinji Takei at the wheel of the #666 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

Reid Harker, #8 Porsche 911 GT3 R: “I’m excited to turn my first laps at Fuji Speedway this weekend. It looks like a really unique circuit, with a combination of fast and slow sections. I want to give a huge thanks to the team for getting the car prepared and ready to go after the round at Suzuka and we are ready to move on to Fuji and target a good result.”

Tanart Sathienthirakul, #18 Porsche 911 GT3 R: “It’s been a while since my last visit to Fuji, so I’m looking forward to returning to the circuit again. We were missing a bit of luck at Suzuka last weekend, but we showed some really good pace and I’m eager to continue challenging at the front here.”

Sky Qiao, Vice President of Marketing, Porsche China: “I’m really excited for Porsche Sports Cup China to return this week at Ningbo, it’s an event that caters for all Porsche fanatics and one that creates a carnival-like atmosphere whenever it’s held. Porsche Sports Cup China is an incredible series that is promoting sports car culture in China and I’m looking forward to seeing the turnout. Porsche is a brand driven by dreams, so to have so many Porsche customers in one place, all with their dream cars is something special.”

Alexandre Gibot, Managing Director Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific.: “I’m pleased that Porsche Sports Cup China is kicking off this week and I’m really keen for this festival of Porsche to begin! It’s really exciting to have such a strong field of Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport making their Sprint Challenge China debut, and I can’t wait to see the drivers in action at the Ningbo International Circuit.

“Meanwhile in Japan, GT World Challenge Asia continues its season at Fuji Speedway. We saw some really strong performances at Suzuka last weekend so I hope the teams can continue their form to take even more silverware this time around. Best of luck to the drivers and I look forward to following their progress.”
