Second straight victory for Hampus Ericsson
Hampus Ericsson has won the initial heat in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia at Gelleråsen Arena. From pole position he lead from the start and then kept the baton throughout the race. The victory was Ericsson's second in a row in the championship. He took the first in the final race of the competition in Falkenberg in July.
“I did not feel so nervous before the race, I got an okay start and then it was important that I was first into the initial curve. After that, I pushed as much as I could for seven, eight minutes and got the gap I needed”, said a happy Ericsson.
Championship leader Lukas Sundahl, who shared the first starting line-up with Ericsson, finished second after he first ended up behind the guest driver Fredrik Ekblom, who got off to a great start and advanced from sixth to second place.
”Ekblom was incredibly slow, thought Sundahl, who once he took care of was far too far behind. However, after a collision between two drivers, Sundahl hoped that a safety car would be called out and pack up the field, but it did not come. You do not always have luck on your side, Sundahl stated.
Ekblom was satisfied with the third place finish. In the final laps he was put under pressure by Edvin Hellsten but managed to hold off and take his first podium place in the championship bettering his previous visit to the Ring Knutstorp were he finished in fourth place.
The basis for the podium was Ekblom's strong start. “On the outside, no one went so I thought then I will drive there”, he said among other things and also admitted about the fight with Sundahl: “I am surprised that I could keep him behind me for so long”.
Five in total and first in the Masters Cup was Thomas Karlsson. “That was my best race ever in the Porsche Carrera Cup. I was also fifth in Skövde in 2015, but that was a race where not many off us made it to the finish line”.
Karlsson held onto fourth for a while, before conceding the position to Edvin Hellsten. “I made a mistake in curve two, I came in too fast and lost the back end.
Second in the Masters Cup was Prince Carl Philip (sixth overall) and third Christoffer Bergström (seventh).
Hugo Andersson and Emil Persson fought for a long time for fourth place, but in the eighth lap there was contact between them. A radiator broke on Persson's car, so he was forced to pit half a lap later. Andersson rolled into the finish line as an equally disappointed twelfth driver.
Of the championship debutants Oscar Löfquist and Tommy Karlsson, the former succeeded best with a tenth place.
