Team Project 1 (Inception Racing) rebuilds Porsche 911 RSR after Sebring incident

WEC

An incident early in the final track session of the FIA WEC Prologue at Sebring International Raceway on Sunday afternoon resulted in the number 56 Team Project 1 Porsche, entered with inception Racing emerge with heavy damage, driver Brendon Iribe mercifully unhurt after a big hit with the concrete barriers at the exit of Turn 1. Inception Racing, which largely runs the WEC programme, will be on two fronts this week at Sebring: IMSA and WEC.

For Team Project 1, the start of the WEC season follows one another and looks the same. The 2021 Prologue at Spa-Francorchamps had caused a lot of trouble for the German team led by Axel Funke who lost a Porsche 911 RSR chassis from the first tests. This time, it is in Sebring that Team Project has an out-of-order chassis.

The Prologue was fatal to the Porsche 911 RSR of Brendan Iribe, Ben Barnicoat and Ollie Millroy. A poorly positioned concrete stud at the edge of the track defeated the Porsche entered by Team Project 1 in collaboration with Inception Racing. This same Inception Racing team had experienced such a mishap during the tests of the 24 Hours of Le Mans last August with his Ferrari. Brendan Iribe escaped unscathed from the runway exit in Sebring.

Team Project 1 has recovered the chassis from GR Racing, forfeited for the 1000 Miles of Sebring. The mechanics of Team Project 1 and Inception Racing were hard at work yesterday for the chassis change. "It's fortunate that GR Racing's Porsche 911 RSR is here in a container” stated Bas Leinders, Team Principal of Inception Racing,

Inception Racing was to participate in the WEC with the support of Kessel Racing, as was the case at Le Mans in 2021. As the commitment was not validated by the Selection Committee, Inception Racing sought a fallback solution by leasing the Porsche 911 RSR to Team Project 1.

The British team owed its invitation to the 2021 24 Hours of Le Mans to a place in the top 4 of the 2021 Asian Le Mans Series. With 23 GT3s on track this season on the Asian series for a single invitation to Le Mans, the task looked much more complicated. At the end of the four races, the McLaren 720S GT3/Inception Racing left with the GT title synonymous with an invitation to Le Mans.

Rather than booking a return ticket back to Le Mans, Inception Racing looked for a solution to run a car in its name. With Brendan Iribe being friends with Alexander West, the two have found common ground to field a Ferrari that will be technically followed by Garage 59, Alexander West's team in GT World Challenge Europe.

Inception Racing clearly intends to return under the name to the WEC next season. In the meantime, the British team managed by Optimum Motorsport has set up two separate teams in Sebring, one for the WEC, one for the IMSA.

This week, Inception Racing is splitting its time between the WEC and IMSA where the McLaren 720S GT3 is racing at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Bas Leinders therefore has to juggle between the two regulations, which is not an easy task.

Brendan Iribe, Ben Barnicoat and Ollie Millroy will switch from a Porsche 911 RSR to a McLaren 720S GT3.
